19-year-old Maliki Skutley has been indicted on murder charges after his 6-week-old baby died due to severe injuries believed to be from homicidal violence, the Gladstone Police Department said in a statement.

The baby had been admitted to a trauma center in Gladstone on April 20 and died three days later.

According to the indictment, Skutkly is accused of "neglect and maltreatment" and showed "extreme indifference to the value of human life," in the death of his baby. Prosecutors also accuse Skutkly of being "deliberately cruel" to the 6-week-old.

Gladstone police said the investigation remains ongoing and that no further details can be released at this time to "preserve the integrity of the investigation."

Clackamas County court documents show that the assault took place on April 16 and that Skutley was “deliberately cruel” to the boy during the attack.

According to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s office, Paxton was left in Skutley’s care while the boy’s mother was at work during the attack.

A police investigation found that the child’s death was caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain as a result of blunt force trauma or extreme pressure.
