A father has been charged with felony murder and child abuse and neglect after his daughter died in January.

Police said a grand jury in Danville handed down indictments against 30-year-old John Robert Shore Monday.

These indictments stem from an incident when officers were called to SOVAH Health emergency room on January 23 for a one-year-old that was suffering from head trauma and was unresponsive.

Police said the child's father, Shore, had taken her to the hospital for medical treatment.

Detectives immediately began an investigation into potential child abuse and neglect.

Police said the baby girl was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital later that evening and died two days later.

The Medical Examiner's Office determined that the child died from repeated blunt force trauma and ruled the girl's death a homicide.

Shore was arrested without incident Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of a Walmart in Stuart.
1-year-old Oaklyn Owens family gave WDBJ7 a statement, "She had the brightest eyes and most contagious smile. She has a family that loves her beyond measure, and we miss her more everyday. Healing has been a hard process for our family and even though we know it can’t bring her back we are hoping a conviction may bring us a sense of peace."

A Danville man has been sentenced to more than a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to killing his child.

John Robert Shore pleaded guilty to first degree murder and child abuse on Thursday, Feb. 27 in Danville Circuit Court after his one-year-old, Oaklyn Owens, died from repeated blunt force trauma.

The Medical Examiner's Office determined Oaklyn died from repeated blunt force trauma and ruled the girl's death a homicide.
Shore was set for a jury trial in March, but instead reached a plea deal for his charges in February. He was sentenced to 30 years with 15 suspended and will be under supervised probation for five years after his release from prison.
