Sentenced: South Carolina Man Who Was Target Practicing Is Charged After Shooting 2 Children, Killing 1

Greenville County investigators have charged a man after two children were shot and one died while the man was target practicing, officials said.

Jonathan Jeremy Groves, 49, was arrested Friday and charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, warrants showed.

Lt. Ryan Flood said the charges are in connection with a Nov. 7 shooting that left a 4-year-old boy and his 7-year-old sister injured.

Four-year-old Jeremiah Groves, Jr died from his injuries on Nov. 11, the coroner said.

According to warrants issued on Nov. 17, Jeremiah was shot in the head.

The wounded girl remains in the hospital in critical condition, Flood said.

Warrants said Groves negligently mishandled and discharged a handgun while in close proximity to minor children.

Warrants also said that, according to his criminal history report, Groves was prohibited from possessing or acquiring a handgun in South Carolina.

Deputies said earlier that Groves was a family member, but Flood did not immediately confirm his relationship to the children.

From the appearance I'm guessing he was using his neighbor's trailer for a target. However, a convicted felon with a firearm is rarely target practicing. Bullets are freaking expensive.
