Court records also revealed that Duran and the mother, Mona Rosita Clarke, are separated. They were together for about 10 years.
Clarke became pregnant, and the couple welcomed the child to the world in 2021. The 2-year-old would have turned 3 in November.
During a press conference at the Pembroke Pines Police Headquarters, officers did not discuss if there was a history of mental illness or if they were calls to the home for domestic violence.
But according to a court filing in 2023, there were several mentions regarding Duran’s mental health.
The filing stated Clarke was afraid of Duran’s “paranoia and anger issues … anxiety and has been Baker Acted a minimum of five times,” and referred to his behavior as “erratic … violent and dangerous to the mother and child.”
The court filing also stated that “the father chased the mother into a bedroom with the child in her arms and punched a fan,” and “the father abused the family dog, punching it in the face.”
Clarke asked the court for a psychological evaluation after saying Duran had been “hearing voices to end his life, some while the child was with him alone.”
Clarke also asked for full custody and a guardian ad litem to help with visits. That paperwork was filed on May of 2023. The court issued a parent plan this March where the father was granted unsupervised visits.
