According to the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office, on Friday, May 31, after a four-day jury trial, Mariann Belair, 24, was found guilty on two counts from a Shawnee County District Court. The counts she was convicted of include:
  • Count 1: Murder in the First Degree – Felony Murder
  • Count 2: Aggravated Endangering of a Child – Reckless
Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office said the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call seeking help on Oct. 14, 2023. When officers and first responders arrived on scene, they found a child suffering from a gunshot wound. The child was later identified as L.P-B., age 4, and she was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.
The Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office said upon further investigation, police discovered that Belair’s kids were in the living room with Belair prior to the shooting happening. Belair told officers that she had retrieved a Sig Sauer P226 Legion 9 mm semi-automatic handgun from upstairs and moved it to the couch downstairs during this time. When taking a picture with her daughter, Belair’s son took the gun and shot it. Belair then moved the gun from the couch to a center-dresser drawer in an adjacent room before police arrived on scene. In a later search of the residence, officers discovered the gun as well as a bag of methamphetamine and paraphernalia in the drawer.
