SPCA Westchester is conducting the second phase of a rescue effort Thursday to remove 40 cats from "horrific hoarding conditions" in a White Plains apartment.

The organization said in a Facebook post Wednesday that 40 cats were found in the apartment after a landlord received calls from residents in their building complaining about a strong smell emanating from one of the units.
SPCA Westchester said officers found the cats living in "filth and garbage" and their own feces. Most of the cats were reported to be dehydrated and sick with various ailments, including respiratory and eye infections.
The organization said food and water traps have been set up to attract the animals, but it could take days to rescue all the cats.

"While it's hard to assess how many more cats could be living in the ceiling and furniture, our team will not stop until every single one is rescued," SPCA Westchester said. "All of these poor felines have been neglected for far too long and desperately need medical care, as well as time, to recover both physically and emotionally."

Officers have so far discovered nearly 40 terrified cats living in filth and garbage. Cats have been found in the ceiling, in furniture, and all of them are dehydrated. Most of the cats are sick and suffering from severe upper respiratory and eye infections. SPCA officials have reported that one of the cats gave birth to a tiny kitten who is clinging to life and was found on the cold floor, amidst mounds of feces.

Food and water stations have been set up, but rescuers say it will take days to capture all of the animals.
SPCA officials say the person who lives in the apartment is an elderly woman and that this is not a case of intentional animal cruelty."In a lot of these cases, sadly people think they're doing the right thing. They get in way over their head, sometimes they get embarrassed to call for help," explains Bonanno.
There's no word yet of any arrests involved with the case, but SPCA officials say they are focused on saving every cat and getting them out of the apartment. They are also asking for help in the form of donations as they expect veterinary care will cost thousands.

Please send prayers for the kitten and his mama.

She is an elderly lady who was trying to help the cats and became overwhelmed. I do not think she will do it again now that the SPCA is involved.
Back in the day when they would euthanize FIV+ cats, a psychiatrist I knew took care of an elderly lady that took all the FIV+ cats/kittens in. She said if she didnt do it, noone else was, and she was right. Shelter, rescues, everyone would call her, and she couldnt say no. She died with 90 cats.

I dont think animal hoarders do it deliberately, I wrote a paper on it in college. They used to say it stemmed from OCD, but now they are distancing from that diagnosis. There is some kind of trauma always involved. They feel like they are saving the animals. I love animals too, so I get it, but my brain says "2 is enough", they dont have that rationale.

They are also blind to the fact that a large amount of the animals are sick. I do not know why, they just dont see it.

I am now down to eight and when my dad's 20 year old cat passes it will be 7 and I can tell you I am overwhelmed and will not be taking in any more cats or dogs.

I do gave one dog which is names sugar cookie

I will probably stop feeding the strays outside as well. Fea is a doll but Ivy was not and I could not keep her in the house. Both were young mothers that I fed through their pregnancies and ended up with the kittens Ivy's surviving two going to FURRR911 and Owen staying with me until his passing.

I’m at five after the death of my foster and don’t plan on getting any more. It’s expensive on a fixed income! Besides my own, I also feed some neighborhood cats.

@Angiebla, I have two FIV+ cats; they’ve been here about six years. It’s hard to imagine that these cats were euthanized; they can live long and healthy lives as long as they don’t go outside.

@Sugar Cookie, I had a friend’s elderly beagle stay with me last week. It was great to have a dog in the house after three years, but I won’t be adopting another one.

I have sick the last couple of days but today it really hit me that Owen is gone.

My heart just can't take it - like I said above Jack is twenty and my dog is 15 so it will continue to hurt.

As they become older the cost of the vet becomes outrageous.
when i had my own house i would feed wild animals when their food supply was low (canadian winters) even a family of red fox, 3 wolves, would skidoo corn and other food far into the bush etc cuz hey they need to eat also :) .. i am elderly now and moved to the "city" and i am down to one dog only and can properly take care of only one fur baby but i sure miss having cats, dogs, and feeding the wild animals ...
