When no one answered their knocks, they kicked in the door and found Martinez lying dead on the kitchen floor from an undisclosed number of stab wounds.

Martinez was in the final trimester of her pregnancy, Fortunato said. Her baby did not survive. It's not clear how long Martinez has been dead by the time her mother found her body.

Detectives on Sunday had neither a suspect nor a motive in the case. They are investigating the stabbing as a homicide and a feticide.

Neighbor Narvey Daniels, 62, didn't hear the commotion following the Martinez's stabbing and only learned of the murder later Sunday morning. Though he didn't know her, he said he sometimes saw Martinez with a older woman and a young child.

Investigators say 23-year-old Katherine Martinez was found lifeless, lying on the kitchen floor. Martinez’s family tells deputies she was in her final trimester.

Authorities say the stabbing happened early Sunday morning, just before 1 a.m., at Martinez’s apartment on the 600 block of Whitney Avenue near Gretna.

“I didn’t really hear the commotion or nothing like that, but if I would tried to intervene; to try to help this lady who is carrying a child. That’s not right. People don’t get involved, I don’t get involved. There’s no Christianity any more,” says neighbor Sonte Hebert.

Pregnant woman strangled to death, found with multiple stab wounds
The Jefferson Parish Coroner now says that a pregnant woman was strangled to death. her body was found in a Terrytown apartment with multiple stab wounds.

Katherine Martinez, 23, was pronounced dead in an apartment on the 600 block of Whitney Avenue early Sunday morning,
[...]
Police received a call at 12:49 a.m. requesting an ambulance for Martinez. Police found her lying on the floor in the apartment's kitchen with multiple stab wounds according to the JPSO. The fetus did not survive.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner has declared the cause of death as strangulation. Officials say that the woman was stabbed in the abdomen.
However, the coroner says that the stab wounds did not kill the unborn child. The unborn died as a result of the mother's death.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Colonel John Fortunato says the assailant may have had a key to the victim's apartment. The dead bolt was found in the locked position when a family friend kicked the door in Sunday morning and discovered Martinez's body.
The assailant will be charged with homicide and feticide when caught.

This is SO similar to a murder we had here in Bucks County, PA last year. In that one, they arrested the father-to-be. He stabbed the pregnant mom and her toddler daughter to death, then tried to set the apartment on fire to cover up the evidence. He was a successful murderer, but not so much as an arsonist.

Now let's see what the sperm donor in this case has to say -- or not say, if he'd like to invoke his right to remain silent. I doubt that there's a person here that would be surprised if he were arrested for the murder.

Uh huh yep totally the guy you want to parent to your child! These animals are too much. Most guys would be doing the "I ain't the Daddy dance" instead he killed her. What a joke.

man strangled and stabbed a pregnant Terrytown woman in a rage after learning he was not the unborn baby's father, Jefferson Parish authorities said Wednesday in announcing the suspect's arrest.

Emilio Calderon, 29, of Larose, confessed, said Col. John Forunato, spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, and will be booked on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree feticide. Calderon was being held for now in a Lafourche Parish, where he was arrested.

[...]

Investigators did not say how they came to suspect Calderon. He was taken into custody in Lafourche Parish and questioned by detectives.

Calderon identified himself as a friend of Martinez, Fortunato said. He told detectives he visited her apartment on Saturday afternoon.

But while there, he learned he was not the father of Martinez's unborn child. The two began arguing, and Calderon grabbed a knife, stabbing her three times, according to authorities. Calderon also admitted to choking Martinez until she died, the sheriff's office said.

The family is now saying that the victim NEVER had a relationship with the accused...he's just down right crazy...the reason he wasn't the father is because they never had sex (or even held hands) so he should've known he was not the father and had absolutely no reason (other than again he's one crazy ass mo' fo') to be upset over not being the father of the soon to be born child. What a shame...2 lives are over all because some idiot couldn't just find someone else who actually wanted him...

For almost two years, Emilio Calderon offered his friendship to Katherine Martinez in hopes that she would want more. Despite her clear rejection of his advances, Calderon became increasingly more obsessive, stalking the 23-year-old at work and school, according to relatives and friends.

But when Calderon discovered she was pregnant two months ago, authorities say his fixation apparently turned fatal. Angered that he was not the unborn baby's father, he stabbed and choked Martinez to death in herTerrytown apartment on Saturday (June 7), Jefferson Parish authorities said.

Despite his claims of an off and on relationship, Martinez's friends and family say he is delusional and had absolutely no reason to believe he was father of her baby, a girl who would have been named Sachally.
[...]
Though relatives and friends helped detectives identify Calderon as a possible suspect, the murder charges came as a surprise to them.

"He came in with this innocent, sweet face. We didn't think he would harm anyone. No one ever thought it would go this far," said Martinez's mother, Orla Martinez, 42, as translated from Spanish by Batrez.

Orla Martinez would tell Calderon, "My daughter does not love you. You can't force somebody to fall in love with you," she recalled. "He would agree and say, 'Yes, I understand. I know it's never going to happen."

Katherine Martinez, known as Kathy, met Calderon two years ago through mutual friends. In an effort to get close to her, he volunteered to give her rides to work and school, according to Orla Martinez and Batrez.

"Kathy was always adamant. She always told him there's nothing here but friendship," Batrez said.

Still, Calderon tried to convince Katherine Martinez that they should be together, even after she met her boyfriend, the eventual father of her child.
Things sometimes got rocky between Martinez and her boyfriend, leading Calderon to step up his efforts, Batrez said.

"(Calderon) would try to bribe her, give her money," Batrez said. "He would tell her, 'I'll buy you a car.' But she would always reject him."

Before long, Calderon began making the drive from Houma just to sit outside in the parking lot of Jenny's, the Terrytown restaurant where Martinez worked as a waitress, Orla Martinez said. Katherine Martinez also caught him watching for her in the parking lot of Blue Cliff College in Metairie where she had been enrolled.

Katherine Martinez tried to limit her contact with him. But Calderon found reasons to come around, often claiming to want to buy the special Honduran bread baked by her mother.

Two months ago, Calderon bumped into Martinez and discovered that she was pregnant. That's when he began stalking her online, creating social media accounts to access her life and send her messages, Orla Martinez said.
[...]
"We want the public to know that just because he pursued her, doesn't mean he was entitled to her," said family friend Onix Palacios, 60. "She was a good daughter, a good sister, a good friend. She didn't deserve this coward taking her life when she had dreams and goals to be a wonderful mother."

Emilio Calderon was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison plus 15 years for stabbing and strangling his pregnant ex-girlfriend to death in her Terrytown apartment last year.

The sentence — the maximum allowed under the law — was handed down by 24th Judicial District Judge Adrian Adams, who ordered that the prison terms be served consecutively. Calderon, convicted of killing Katherine Martinez and her unborn child, will not be eligible for parole, probation or a suspended sentence.
Martinez’s body was found by her mother on the floor of her Terrytown apartment on June 7, 2014. She had been stabbed three times, but the coroner determined the cause of death was strangulation.

Her unborn child was unable to survive and died soon afterward.
Investigators testified that Calderon, 30, had stalked Martinez online after the two were briefly involved and had become upset that she was pregnant with another man’s child.

Calderon’s DNA was found under Martinez’s fingernails, and a cell tower picked up his cellphone within a mile of her house at the time she was killed.

His 2017 appeal was denied.
