A Florida woman accused of fatally shooting her neighbor last week in the violent culmination of what the sheriff described as a 2½-year feud was arrested Tuesday, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.
Susan Louise Lorincz, 58, who is white, was arrested on charges of manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery and two counts of assault in the death of Ajike Owens, a Black mother of four, Sheriff Billy Woods said in a statement.

Authorities came under pressure Tuesday to arrest and charge the woman who fired through her front her door and killed Owens in a case that has put Florida’s divisive stand your ground law back into the spotlight.
In a video posted on Facebook late Tuesday night, the sheriff said this was not a stand your ground case but “simply a killing.”

“Now many of you were struggling to understand why there was not an immediate arrest,” the sheriff said. “The laws here in the state of Florida are clear. Now I may not like them. I may not agree with them. But however, those laws I will follow.”

The video shared by the sheriff’s office shows two detectives and a deputy escorting Lorincz, who was wearing shorts, a black top and a jacket, down a hallway. The woman’s hands were behind her back as she walked.
Woods said that when interviewed by investigators, Lorincz claimed she acted in self-defense and that Owens had been trying to break down her door prior to her discharging her firearm. Lorincz also claimed that Owens had come after her in the past and had previously attacked her. Through their investigation – including obtaining the statements of eyewitnesses – detectives were able to establish that Lorincz’s actions were not justifiable under Florida law, a statement from the sheriff’s office said.

About three dozen mostly Black protesters gathered outside the Marion County Judicial Center to demand that the shooter be arrested in the country’s latest flashpoint over race and gun violence. The chief prosecutor, State Attorney William Gladson, met with the protesters and urged patience while the investigation continues.
The sheriff said Owens was shot moments after going to Lorincz’s apartment, who had yelled at Owens’ children as they played in a nearby lot. He also said Lorincz had thrown a pair of skates that hit one of the children.

Deputies responding to a trespassing call at the apartment Friday night found Owens suffering from gunshot wounds. She later died at a hospital.

Before the confrontation, Lorincz had been yelling racial slurs at the children, according to a statement from civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Owens’ family. He also represented Trayvon Martin’s family in 2012, when the Black teenager was killed in a case that drew worldwide attention to the state’s stand your ground law.

The sheriff’s office hasn’t confirmed there were slurs uttered or said whether race was a factor in the shooting.

In a statement, Crump said while Owens’ family is “relieved” that an arrest has been made, they remain concerned it has taken this long because “archaic laws like Stand Your Ground exist”

Lauren Smith, 40, lives across the street from where the shooting happened. She was on her porch that day and saw one of Owens’ young sons pacing, and yelling, “They shot my mama, they shot my mama.”

She ran toward the house, and started chest compressions until a rescue crew arrived. She said there wasn’t an altercation and that Owens didn’t have a weapon.

“She was angry all the time that the children were playing out there,” Smith said. “She would say nasty things to them. Just nasty.” Smith, who is white, described the neighborhood as family friendly.

The sheriff said that since January 2021, deputies responded at least a half-dozen calls in connection with what police described as feuding between Owens and Lorincz.

“There was a lot of aggressiveness from both of them, back and forth,” the sheriff said Lorincz told investigators. “Whether it be banging on the doors, banging on the walls and threats being made. And then at that moment is when Ms. Owens was shot through the door.”

A Florida woman who fatally shot a mother of four after a long running dispute involving her children will not face murder charges, officials said Monday.

Susan Lorincz, 58, was instead hit with manslaughter and assault raps for killing Ajike Owens earlier this month in Ocala after feuding with her and her family for two years.

Owens’ attorneys — along with lawyer Ben Crump — had demanded the charges be upgraded to murder, highlighting how witnesses heard Lorincz hurling racial slurs at Owens’ children before the shooting.

But State Attorney William Gladson opted against the stiffer charge, arguing in a statement the killing did not qualify for the “depraved mind” element of a second-degree murder rap.

“Depraved mind requires evidence of hatred, spite, ill will, or evil intent toward the victim at the time of the killing,” he said. “As deplorable as the defendant’s actions were in this case, there is insufficient evidence to prove this specific and required element of second-degree murder.”

Seems all the elements for a murder charge were there

I agree with @knockout.

I don't understand people who can't stand seeing and hearing children playing and having a good time. If I thought the kids were monsters and always into stuff then I would want them playing where I could see and hear them. But some people just can't stand happy people because they are sad miserable sacks of shit who want to rain on everybody's parade. I, personally, like the sounds of kids playing, it makes me happy that they are happy.

This was absolutely murder imho.

From the video it really seems like she completely expected to get no repercussions from this until they told her she was being booked and she lost her shit.

She's also one of those assholes who decides that common areas belong solely to them and police it like they're fucking Scotland Yard trying to protect London from Jack the Ripper. Surprised she's not in a fucking HOA.

Try to beat down someone else's front door, and get shot through the door from the inside. It does not sound so far-fetched to me as a case of fearing for your life.

However - - * makes a note for the future* - - to avoid trouble, let the person get all the way in before blasting them. Even in Florida.

I did not watch the videos or such. But, just saying.

Neighbours and witnesses say the victim had no weapon and she never threatened this lady, they did say that this lady was aggressive, attacked the woman's children for playing in a public area and then told them to bring their mom over, she's also been heard using racial slurs towards them. I'm sure many of the moms here would have had a similar reaction to someone assaulting their children, should she have called the cops first? Probably. Should she have been shot? Absolutely not.

Also, the cop checked the door and there was very little damage to it, and he was unable to slam it open himself while the door was unlocked, so I sincerely doubt one lady would have been able to do a damn thing to get in there with the door dead-bolted, despite the shooter's histrionics.

Susan Lorincz, white Florida woman who fatally shot Black neighbor, found guilty of manslaughter

A white woman with a history of harassing children and using racial slurs was convicted of manslaughter on Friday in the fatal shooting of a Black neighbor last year in Ocala, Florida.

Susan Louise Lorincz, 60, killed Ajike “AJ” Owens with a single shot from a .380-caliber handgun as Owens knocked on her apartment door on June 2, 2023.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said at the time Lorincz and Owens were in a long-standing “feud” over Owens’ children playing.

The all-white, six-person jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter despite the 60-year-old asserting that her actions were in self-defense. Lorincz, who showed no emotion, faces up to 30 years in prison.

We had a woman who lived diagonally across the street from us, who was constantly calling the police about the children playing near her house. She complained so many times about the cars being parked on the street near my house they finally sent someone out to paint the curb yellow in front of my house. Every house could park on the street except our house We had 3 cars, mine, husband's and oldest son's, and we had to park in the front yard, because we couldn't get to back because of a chain link fence. Kids never bother me, it's the ass holey adults that bother me.

And yeah, I thoroughly believe she planned this, she just never thought she'd be charged cause she's so smart and planned it perfectly.

My condolences to Ms. Owen’s family, I hope they can recover from this, go forward and thrive in spite of Ms lorincz! Cubby, I’m with you, the sound of a child’s laughter, and seeing them playing is happiness. I hope Ms lorincz spends the remainder of her life in prison, she can try spreading her racial hatred there!

A white woman in Florida was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting her neighbor, a Black mother of four, in a case that sparked outrage and yet another national reckoning over gun violence and racism.
A jury convicted Susan Lorincz, 60, of manslaughter in August for killing Ajike Owens outside of her home in Ocala on June 2, 2023. Owens, who went by the name A.J., was 35 when she died.
On Monday, Judge Robert Hodges said Lorincz had ample time to call law enforcement and that there was no real risk that Owens was trying to break into her home. "The shooting was based, I find, more in anger than in fear," Hodges said before the sentencing.

Lorincz shot Owens during an ongoing dispute between them over children in the neighborhood, including Owens' children, apparently playing in the area around Lorincz's residence, according to trial testimony and the arrest affidavit for Lorincz.
Authorities said Owens approached the door of Lorincz's home the day of the shooting to confront her, after learning the older woman had engaged in an argument with the children outside, shouted, and threw a roller skate at one of them.
Owens' 10-year-old son accompanied her to Lorincz's residence, where she knocked on Lorincz's door and demanded she come outside. Lorincz proceeded to fire a .380-caliber handgun through the door, striking Owens in the upper chest. Owens was unresponsive by the time authorities arrived at the scene and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The door to Lorincz's home was locked when she fired the shot and Owens was unarmed.
