Miguel Ruiz Lobo, upset that his girlfriend broke up with him, sneaked into her home and stabbed her 11-year-old daughter to death last month. He then tried to make the stabbing look like it was a suicide, police said.

When Amaury Alvarenga returned to her Little Havana home, she found her daughter, Martha Guzman, in a pool of blood, with a knife sticking out from her throat.

Police said Lobo made a crucial mistake in his attempted coverup: In trying to make the death look like a suicide, he sliced through tendons in the girl’s wrists, making it impossible for her to be able to stab herself in the throat. The child had a history of cutting herself in what her mother described as a cry for help.

Sadly, Martha's mother had taken steps to protect both of them from the psycho, but her request for a restraining order was denied.

Alvarenga, who works at a school on Fisher Island, filed a petition on March 31 with Miami-Dade County Circuit Court to have a restraining order placed on Lobo.

In the filing, she said she was on her way to work and was waiting for the ferry to Fisher Island in late March when she spotted Lobo, who was intoxicated. She said that Lobo grabbed her shirt, but that she broke free and got on the ferry as security guards subdued him. Police were not called.

The motion before Acting Circuit Court Judge Judith Rubenstein was denied initially when she ruled “there is no appearance of an immediate and present danger of domestic violence.”

A hearing was set for April 14, when Alvarenga’s request was denied for a final time.

I wonder if the judge who refused the restraining order is still comfortable with his decision. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if it were me who'd dropped the ball so badly. And I'd mail a photo of Martha to him, with clippings of the press coverage of her brutal murder.

I started cutting around that age as well. Part of what got to me about this story is what Marv said, that he used her past of self harm to try and cover up the murder. People who cut don't just up and stab themselves in the fucking neck, especially preteens who just started. My therapist once told me that if you're not seriously injuring yourself it can be therapeutic. It's just some people's maladaptive coping mechanism, and usually not related to serious suicidal ideation.

I started at 14 was a cutter then switched to burning, seeing it in an 11 year old just hurts my heart. 11 is still a baby, she should still be shielded from pain and protected by her parents until their dying breath. It's also distraction either from other pain or numbness or both. You can count me in with the previous poster who do similar. I wouldn't say it was as much a question of control for me, I was an only child and had a fairly high level of freedom. It was relieving, something to focus on I guess, or it's just to feel... something.

When I did my training in CASA, they warned us not to try to stop the girls or even pay attention to it, because it could be the straw that is keeping her together and the avenue to vent or feel without doing something more drastic. I represented one girl that was so bad, that we had to put her in the hospital to help her. I tried to get the judge to remove her from her house and she wouldn't do it.

Thank God for CCTV. I really do hope he has no fun in jail. Why should he enjoy one minute of any time he spends in jail when he took the life of a child becoz he was jealous.

The trial for Miguel Ruiz Lobo continued on Tuesday. Police said Ruiz Lobo killed 11-year-old Martha Guzman because of a bad breakup with her mom, Amaury Alvarenga.

The girl was found in her mother’s apartment in Miami, with her neck slashed and her wrists cut.

"She had her hand cut off, hanging from a little piece of skin," Alvarenga said through a translator. "Her forehead was dented. Lips were swollen."

Alvarenga was working while Guzman was home alone that day. It was summer vacation. In tears, Alvarenda told the jury she trusted Guzman, which is why she was comfortable with leaving her home alone.

But surveillance video shown to the jury appeared to show someone else joining her.


“Do you see someone leaving from your apartment?” the prosecutor asked Alvarenga.

“Yes,” she said, pointing out a man captured on security surveillance video played in front of the jury.

“Do you feel like you know who that person was?” the prosecutor followed up.

“Miguel Ruiz,” Alvarenga answered.

An officer testified that as police analyzed the crime scene, Ruiz Lobo allegedly came back to ask questions.

Ruiz Lobo appeared to get very emotional as Alvarenga spoke about their relationship, and how his excessive drinking was the cause of their split.

Police said Ruiz Lobo made the scene look like a suicide, but the victim's mom and sister say she wasn’t suicidal.
