Mom Chantel Shofner Defends Man Charged In 4M/O Son's Death

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —A father faces charges after police said he beat his 4-month-old baby to death, but the child’s mother said detectives have it all wrong.

Chantel Shofner named her baby boy Macaio Kai.

“It means gift from God, and Kai means rejoice,â€￾ Shofner said.

The child was an unexpected gift who was born two months early.


“He came home on oxygen,â€￾ Shofner said. “He got sick a lot. We had to take him to the doctor a lot.â€￾

In October 2011, police said Luc Westfall was watching his baby when he called 911 after noticing the child had stopped breathing. Macaio later died at the hospital.

Last month, the state Office of the Medical Investigator ruled that Macaio died from a blunt force injury to the head.

Westfall was arrested Saturday on a charge of child abuse resulting in death. On Sunday, he asked for a lower bond, but the judge denied that request.

“He would do anything for his son. He would put that baby before anything,â€￾ Shofner said. “He's freaking out, he's sad, he's hurt.â€￾
Family friend Brianna Hall said she was in the couple’s apartment the night of the incident.

“There was nothing wrong with that home. I saw nothing wrong with it,â€￾ Hall said. “Luc had nothing to do with his death.â€￾
