The woman had only had the dog 'a few weeks', and the dog was an 18mth old rescue dog. And she still thought it was ok to leave the dog with the tiny baby. And if she already had 3 dogs, why get another one just a couple of weeks before she gives birth? Surely she had enough on her plate already!

You know what, I totally agree. I am not forgetting about or detracting from the tragedy of the poor baby's death, but give the dog a break, man. This women never should have left a newborn with a new and rescued pup.

The poor dog has been through enough, and now it must be put down because of human failures and errors? What a bunch of shit. The new owner wanted to give the dog another chance? Fucking let him. God, that pisses me off.

Or is the husky now a man-eater?

Dog That Fatally Bit Baby Boy Is Safe, For Now
Allegheny County Judge Will Decide If Nikko The Husky Is Dangerous
PITTSBURGH -- An 18-month-old Husky that bit and killed a newborn baby was given a temporary reprieve on Thursday by a judge who must decide if the animal should be put down as a dangerous dog.
After a hearing in front of Allegheny County Judge Ed Borkowski, all parties agreed that the dog will remain in custody in its current holding facility and be evaluated again for a follow-up hearing three weeks from now.
"There is a process involved in dealing with this animal and the court is following that process," the district attorney's office said in an email.
Borkowski wrote that the purpose of the hearing is to show evidence of "a person/entity who is able to provide proper care and custody of the animal, taking into account the safety of the public, as well as the facts and circumstances of this case."
The judge's previous order remains in effect for now: "Nikko will remain in his current placement until that hearing has been completed or order of this court changing such placement for purposes of evaluation or care."

[..]
But a court order was later executed by a state dog warden to seize Nikko from Uhring's home in Churchill.
While an investigation by the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office continues, the mother of the baby who died is not expected to face any criminal charges.
"It looks as if it was a very tragic accident," District Attorney Stephen Zappala said.
McKeesport police said the boy's mother had been in another room when she went into the living room and saw the Husky hovering over her baby, then noticed the newborn's head injuries.
"A terrible tragedy, a baby died. It doesn't get any worse than that," Uhring told Channel 4 Action News reporter Sheldon Ingram. "But then we heard the story that the dog was adopted a few weeks back (and had) a broken leg. It wasn't this dog's fault."
The pit bull went back to the home in McKeesport, but Uhring decided to keep Nikko and rename the dog Halo.
"The dog was put in a situation that it shouldn't have been in, as was the baby. And we thought, the dog doesn't need to die," said Uhring.
Nikko and the pit bull were removed from the home in McKeesport because, according to the city ordinance, a household can have up to two dogs in it, and four dogs were living there when the baby was bitten.
"The dog catcher said (Nikko) was at the bottom of the feeding chain, as far as feeding goes, so it was inevitable that it was going to happen," said Uhring.
Ingram reported that Nikko has a broken leg and was wearing what appeared to be a homemade contraption at the time of the baby's death.
Uhring said he was told by the owner that the leg contraption was applied by a veterinarian, but he's not so sure.
"(The owner) couldn't show us receipts or names or anything like that," he said.
Uhring since made sure the dog got an appropriate cast.

@ceidsgil, Do you frequent STFU Parents?? :) I'd recognize 'precious snowflake' anywhere, hahaha. Good for you for reacting that way with your dog. I have brought up my children to ALWAYS ASK the owner if they can pet the animal first. You just never know...

Expert: Dog That Fatally Mauled Baby Not Dangerous

[...]
In court on Thursday, a behavior expert who's working with Nikko the husky told Judge Ed Borkowski that he does not believe the dog is dangerous, and he said it's safe for someone to adopt the animal.
As evidence, the expert showed the judge a video of Nikko letting him take a treat from the dog's mouth.
The expert suggested that the wounds suffered by the baby, Howard Nicholson, were a result of play gone horribly wrong and not an attack. The district attorney's office said Nikko is a dangerous dog. More testimony will be given on the next court date of April 27.
After hearing all evidence, Borkowski will decide if Nikko should be destroyed or if it can go home to its new owner, from whom the animal was seized by a state dog warden under court order.
"Nikko will remain in his current placement until that hearing has been completed or order of this court changing such placement for purposes of evaluation or care," Borkowski said in a written order.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER leave any baby alone with ANY dog. EVER. Hell, never leave a small child alone with ANY dog, let alone a newborn. Mom should have been charged with neglect imo.

Dog That Fatally Bit Baby Boy Will Be Sent Away
Judge Decides Not To Put Helo Down
PITTSBURGH -- An Allegheny County judge has decided not to destroy a dog that bit a 2-day-old boy who died, but the animal will not be put up for adoption either.
In court on Friday, the district attorney's office and lawyers for the dog's owner reached an agreement to send Helo the husky to an out-of-state sanctuary where the dog will have no contact with the public.
"This was a compromise and I am glad that it is over. And I think it refocuses the true tragedy, which is the loss of an infant and the people responsible for the loss of that infant," said Deputy District Attorney Laura Ditka.
"The main goals here were to be able to provide a sense of security and protection to the public and to allow Helo to be able to live the remainder of his life," said Pamela Amicarella, the attorney for the dog's owner.
Judge Ed Borkowski approved the agreement, saying it was a reasonable and just conclusion for all parties.

The judge also said the circumstances and possible shortcomings of human conduct -- not necessarily just the dog's actions -- may have been to blame for the death of young Howard Nicholson

Still no charges for the mother? She's the one at fault here, and it sounds to me like she should not own ANY pets, period, based on prior issues with the condition of her animals, and that a vet said the situation with the baby was basically in the making the whole time. I will go so far as to say this woman shouldn't bear or care for children. There it is.

Looks like one of the dogs was a pitbull but not the one that bit the baby.

Doesn't sound like this woman was preparing well to bring her newborn baby home. Cited for excessive number of dogs and for the condition of the dogs. Makes you think what kind of care she'd give her baby if she didn't mind her dogs very well. . . well, clearly she didn't know much about dogs and babies in the same space.

Really tragic. Rest in peace baby
Howard Nicholson.

Well this explains it, one pitbull will ruiin the whole bunch. All it had to do was be present.

McKeesport mom waives hearing related to baby's fatal dog bite
Brandy Furlong charged with misdemeanor dog law violation

A woman whose newborn baby died after a dog bite did not appear for her court date on a misdemeanor charge Monday morning.
Through her lawyer, 22-year-old Brandy Furlong waived her right to a preliminary hearing. The McKeesport woman will be formally arraigned at a later date.
"She's obviously dealing with the trauma of a loss of a child," attorney Casey Mullen said. "Coupled with that are these allegations and charges that she somehow, some way, played a part in it."

Furlong is charged with a violation of a state dog law under the title "attacks causing severe injury or death," according to court records.

There are no charges of endangerment for the mother? It seems pretty clear that she endangered her child by leaving him alone with that dog.

When my oldest son was born I owned a toy Pomeranian, she weighed 2 pounds, was full grown and I had owned her for about 3 years at that point. My son was a preemie and while in the NICU the hospital staff sent me home with a blanket that he had slept on for my dog to get used to his smell. Even with that the dog was never left alone with my son and she was a great dog, two young kids were playing with her and accidentally broke her foot and she never even nipped at the kids. Still I wasn't comfortable leaving her alone with my baby, good as I felt she was.

The mother of a 2-day-old boy who was killed by a family dog has pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of children and dog attack causing serious injury or death.

Brandy Furlong, 22, was sentenced to six months of house arrest and three years of probation in connection with the endangerment charge and two years of probation for the dog attack charge.

Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge Edward J. Borkowski said the two periods of probation may be served consecutively.
The judge also raised questions about Furlong's living conditions since her pet husky fatally attacked her newborn son Howard Nicholson Jr. on Feb. 16, 2012, in Furlong's Scott Street home.

Furlong and the boy's father, Howard Nicholson Sr., still live together at another location in McKeesport. The couple no longer owns any animals, and two other children Furlong has with another partner are living with the biological father in Somerset County, according to court testimony.
Public defender Nicole Jackson said Furlong hopes to have shared custody and again become part of the lives of her children, ages 3 and 7.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” said Jackson. “She has suffered a lot since this has happened.”
Furlong, who was accompanied in court by Nicholson Sr., only responded to the court with yes and no answers. Outside the courtroom, she said she was unhappy with the way prosecutor Laura Ditka handled evidentiary photos showing her son after the dog attack in the courtroom. Though Ditka did not have to present the photos to the court, they were briefly visible to those seated in the gallery.

“I'm not really pleased in having to look at the pictures,” Furlong said.
Ditka remarked to the judge that it was interesting to note that when issues involving the ownership and fate of the dog blamed for the attack were at stake, the courtroom was filled to capacity. Now, when charges directly related to the death of a child were at issue, none of those former throngs were around, she said.
Furlong had left her son unattended in a baby carrier on the floor of the home while she was in another room. She heard the child screaming minutes later and ran in to see the child covered in blood with the family's pet husky Nikko hovering over him.

The infant was pronounced dead from severe head trauma about 90 minutes later at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

"Dog Images Released
UPDATE 02/17/12: In an "otherworldly" update, images of the dog involved in the fatal mauling of a 2-day old boy have been released. The images clearly show the "homemade" contraption created to support the dog's broken right foreleg. According to Dog Law Enforcement Officer Ken Ferree, "Apparently they rescued this dog from the Craigslist website from Murrysville about two-and-a-half weeks ago." Ferree correctly describes this adoption as a "ticking time bomb."

The family of the deceased child has already asked to have their two dogs returned.1

American Pit Bull Terrier Assn Inc

The husky was sent to a sanctuary for dangerous dogs and former fighting dogs.

She should have been charged with animal cruelty as well.

That dog needed medical attention not what ever care she and the child's father were attempting to provide it.

Also there is no mention or even a picture of this child on either of their social medias.
