Brooke Hellwig was wheeling her daughter, Olivia Anne Hellwig, in a stroller across the pedestrian crossway of a parking lot when the SUV backed into the stroller.

Hellwig told CBS Atlanta that she was going to the car to get a sippy cup for Olivia, but never imagined it would be the last time she would see her sweet baby alive.

"(The driver) ran over her and crushed her, and then for some reason went forward over her again," said Brooke Hellwig.

According to Gwinnett County police, Olivia was taken to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta, where she died from her injuries.

"It's utterly devastating and very hard to talk about," said Brad Hellwig, Olivia's father.

The driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a 1-year-old in a stroller in a park near Snellville has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular homicide, according to Gwinnett County authorities.

Tekila Mynon Glass, 30, of Riverdale also was charged with improper backing in the death Sept. 17 of Olivia Hellwig.

In a statement issued Friday morning, the Gwinnett County Police Department said that based on what its Accident Investigation Unit had learned, "it is believed that Ms. Glass is primarily at fault for this accident."

Glass was arrested after turning herself in at Gwinnett County Jail and was released after she posted bond, police said. No other charges are pending at this time.

Glass was backing a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica through the parking lot at Lenora Park on Lenora Church Road when the vehicle struck a stroller pushed by Brooke Hellwig, Olivia’s mother, police said.

The child was transported to Children's Healthcare at Egleston in Atlanta, where she later died. Brooke Hellwig was treated for minor injuries, police said.

A Gwinnett police initial incident report indicated Glass’ vehicle had six occupants and alcohol was not a contributing factor.

In a statement issued Friday, the Hellwig family said, "The reckless actions of the driver caused this accident and the parents of Olivia are relieved that the police investigation has now confirmed this fact and resulted in charges being brought against the driver."

My husband and I were out on a shopping spree a couple weeks ago, because we were out of everything all at once. We went to three different stores and each time when I was pushing my son in the cart out to the car, someone almost backed over me and him. The third time, I lost it, and punched the bitch's car to get her attention. Her bumper actually touched me! She flipped out and started to yell at me for scratching the paint on her car with my ring. She threatened to call the police, and I whipped my cell phone out of the pocket and started dialing for her. I said, "Yes, please call the police. I'd like to file a complaint against you for your driving." She backed down and I said "Maybe repainting your Escalade will make you think to look before you back over somebody. Had you ran over my son, you'd be dead, and I'm not joking."

We still had more shopping to do, but my husband took me and the baby home for our own safety and did it himself.

How fucking difficult is it to look behind you!? I do it, and I have neck and back problems!

I'm glad Glass got charged with something. People have been getting off the hook far too often for this stuff, and no one take driving as seriously as it should be taken. I feel so awful for the parents. :( I hope Olivia didn't suffer too much..
 
I'm so crazy about that! I often get out and check sometimes more than once, especially if I know there are kids anywhere in the vicinity. I would be so devastated if I hit a kid!!

People are so inconsiderate these days. If I happened to accidentally hit and kill someone I think I'd never forgive myself and commit suicide. Especially if it's a sweet child.
 
She had six distractions in the vehicle. And the vehicle itself is large, probably has major rearward visibility problems. They don't say whether it had rearview cameras or anything to help with the problem. Seriously, though, Escalades, Hummers, Suburbans, etc. are very popular here and it's a wonder this isn't happening all the time.

Living in North Dakota, you need a truck sometimes just to get to work. There have been many times I've missed work because I live in another town and can't get to my work due to weather. I have driven three Suburbans, four pickup trucks, an Escalade, a Yukon and an Explorer (note: I have not owned any of these vehicles, just borrowed either for moving or for weather purposes). It's really not that difficult to see out of them. Yes they have blind spots, but if you drive like a normal person, you're fine.
 
This should have been prosecuted as a hate crime.
If the baby had been black and the Suv driver white, the Trayvon Martin case would have looked like small town news compared to this..
 
That's the only thing I don't like about strollers, they seem to go in front of you, shielding you from harm & having the babies take all the "hit".

And I'm gonna have a "mommy-ish" moment here but I don't give a rat's ass if you say: But your kids walk & they can hold hands!

When I go some place out in public without any sort of fence that surrounds me & the 2 kids in a relatively small place, I'm putting their fucking little arses in a damned double stroller (that shit is fucking longer than a regular stroller:

because they're one behind the other not side by side). That keeps them to running into on coming traffic or one running towards it while the other runs in the opposite direction of the other. It also keeps them strapped enough that I can control the shit they touch/break/destroy or fuck with.

Hate me, but you ain't running over my kids if I can help it. So fucking thank me you ain't going to jail for involuntary manslaughter & you can go fuck a cow.

Actually I did suck at that one, I meant to say a white baby backing out into a black woman is a hate crime. whereas black babies driving get a pass. :D you were not supposed to biter on that one chicka
 
Yeah I can safely say this bitch would not have left that parking lot w/o a few bruises and abrasions to go with that smug look in her mugshot. How hard is it to tell the six distractions in the car to STFU while you concentrate on backing safely out of a parking spot?
I swear on everything this is one of my biggest fears. This and getting sideswiped as I take my kid to school.
Everyday I walk my kid to school in his stroller and I am beyond unnerved at times when it comes to crossing the street where they have a 4-way stop w/ the option for cars to turn. Sometimes people will see me standing on the corner about to cross then they will zip their happy behinds across the street just as I am thinking to cross. It's kinda hard to jerk a 42lb toddler from the curbs edge as some dipshit gets their NASCAR on.
