Heath Green saw his neighbor's baby over the weekend and knew something was wrong. We asked him how the seven week old baby looked. "Not good, it wouldn't open his eyes, Green said. He lives next door to 21 year old Shannon Comeau and her seven week old baby boy Isaac Scott.
Green says the young mother came to his house with panic in her eyes and fear in her voice. "She came and knocked on our back door and she said that her baby wouldn't open his eyes. And he was just wouldn't quit crying. Wouldn't lift his head up."
This was around midnight Saturday. We learned earlier in the day she had sought help for little Isaac. We looked deeper into the story and found out from investigators that the 21 year old mother actually brought her baby son here to Emerlad Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee. Doctors first thought he had flu or cold like symptoms but we found out baby Isaac had much more serious problems.
Green explained what happened after that first trip to the hospital when they saw the baby unable to open his eyes. "My dad took her to her boyfriend's house and I reckon her boyfriend took her to the hospital."
On the second trip, investigators say the baby stopped breathing. Lifeforce rushed the seven week old baby to T.C. Thompson where doctors found brain bleeds, retinal hemmorhaging, and a skull fracture. Detectives under sheriff Brent Myers questioned the baby's mother and father. "There is reasonable suspicion that someone has shaken the baby. By reports from the doctor some of the brain damage is older, some of it is more recent," Sheriff Myers said.
And we discovered earlier this year Comeau abandoned her three year old daughter and one year old son. Sheriff Myers explained, "Took them in the front door and told them that she didn't want them anymore and that she left them. They tried to get her to take the children back with her and she wouldn't do it and she left the children there at the Department of Children's Services.
We also learned the young mother and baby Isaac moved here just weeks ago. The outlook for Isaac is grim. Sheriff Myers said emergency room doctors broke the news to his detectives, "The ICU doctor says the child has about a five percent chance of surviving."
