The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Monday that Arlene Mary Bonitz, 57, of Palm Harbor, Florida, was driving south on Sunday on Interstate 95 near the 64-mile marker in Godwin, North Carolina. In the car with her was a man for whom she provides care and support due to his cognitive issues, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the news release, Bonitz stabbed the man several times with a felt-tipped marker before pushing him out of her car while driving at 60 mph (96 km/h). She continued driving on I-95 before she crashed, the sheriff’s office said.
Bonitz and the victim were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The victim suffered a broken pelvis and had road rash on his face, hands, and legs, investigators said.

Bonitz was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

A broken pelvis is nothing to sneeze at, all the more so that the man probably doesn't have the mental capacity to express himself or fully understand what's happening to him. All he knows is that he's in excruciating pain.

If she hadn't crashed the car, it could have been some time before she was caught. I wonder what she was high on.

I also wonder how she came to be his caretaker. Agency? Private contact? Whoever hired her must be kicking themselves bloody.

He also could be the victim of a grifter. That happened to a woman who worked for my former hair dresser. She ended up in the clutches of two women who quickly got her information and guided her through giving them access to her bank account. She had two sons who weren't at all attentive to her needs, and I think they finally stepped in and did something about it and put her in a nursing home. By then she was in pretty bad shape.
