Eric Robert Rehse was charged with smuggling fentanyl into Butte County Jail in his anal cavity that caused five overdoses this week.
According to deputies, they believe Rehse snuck the fentanyl into his anus before he was arrested and removed them before he was stripped searched and put in his housing unit.
Early Thursday morning correctional deputies were told three inmates in medium-security housing were potentially overdosing.
Narcan was administered multiple times to the three inmates and they were taken to the hospital.
Two of those three inmates have been released from the hospital back into jail.
Later on Thursday a fourth inmate from the same housing unit also showed signs of overdosing and was given multiple doses of naloxone.
This fourth inmate was also treated at the hospital and released back into jail, according to BCSO.
The housing unit was then searched and 14 grams of fentanyl was found inside an inmate's anal cavity, which they voluntarily removed.
An additional .8 grams of fentanyl was discovered.
The inmates in the housing unit were then warned of the dangers of fentanyl use.
On Friday a fifth inmate in the same housing unit as the day prior was treated for an opioid overdose. A single dose of naloxone was enough to treat them.
Rehse was re-arrested and a request for a complaint to the Butte County District Attorney's Office for felony charges of bringing a controlled substance into the jail and sale/transportation/distribution of a controlled substance was sent.
Rehse had initially turned himself in for a warrant on a property crime and was arrested.
