There are details released today by the local law enforcement clarifying what happened during last week's incident at the Oyo Hotel in East Hanover.

They are seeking information regarding Edwin A. Urbina (DOB 10/14/1993) who has been charged by complaint-warrant with first degree Murder, second degree Endangering the Welfare of Children, third degree Tampering with a Witness, and fourth degree Tampering with Evidence in connection with this matter. These charges arise in connection with the beating death of Urbina’s girlfriend’s three year old son.

On August 13, 2021, shortly after 5:00AM, officers from the Morristown Police Department responded to the Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ on a report of a three year old male in cardiac arrest. The subsequent investigation revealed that the child had sustained a number of physical injuries. Following an autopsy, Morris County Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Carlos Fonseca, M.D. determined the manner of death to be homicide.

The subsequent investigation has revealed that the fatal beating of the child occurred at the Oyo Hotel in East Hanover, NJ. It is alleged that Urbina physically beat the three year old boy in the early morning hours of August 13, 2021, resulting in the boy’s death, and that the victim’s mother, Krystal Straw, was not present during the assault but arrived at the hotel shortly thereafter. It is alleged that after her arrival, Straw transported Urbina to another location before bringing the victim to the Morristown Medical Center. It is further alleged that Urbina instructed Straw to delete content from her cellular telephone and deny his involvement in the homicide when speaking to the police.

Urbina remains a fugitive at this time. He should not be approached and is considered dangerous.
Krystal Straw (DOB 05/20/1993) has also been charged in connection with this matter. Specifically, she has been charged with second degree Endangering the Welfare of Children, third degree Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution, third degree Tampering with a Witness, and fourth
degree Tampering with Evidence. She remains lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance currently scheduled for August 18, 2021.

I am pleased to report the successful apprehension of Edwin Urbina, who stands accused of First Degree Murder, Second degree EWC, Third Degree Tampering with a Witness and Fourth Degree Tampering with Evidence for the fatal beating of a 3 year old child. This case represents an outstanding example of both internal and external intra and inter-agency cooperation in both identifying this defendant and the huge effort in supporting a regional manhunt that resulted in his turn in today to the MCPO. This recognition is for all legal, investigative and support staff who worked non-stop on this case.

The press release doesn't do justice for the crime...

Did the chief use the wrong template in making the announcement? Pleased... Successful... Outstanding... Recognition...

What the hell! Did Edwin win an award?

Krystal Straw told police officers she was alone with her two children in an East Hanover hotel the night of Aug. 12 and into the morning of Aug. 13, when she noticed that her toddler was having trouble breathing. She tried CPR and then rushed him to the hospital, she said.

The 3-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after 5 a.m. at Morristown Medical Center. Police said he was covered with bruises to his face, back, buttocks and legs.

But in the moments after her son's death, medical staff said, they overheard Straw ask her 5-year-old daughter to keep a secret.

"Don't tell anyone what happened," she allegedly told the youngster.

The words were not enough to keep the girl from revealing what she had witnessed that night, according to prosecutor's statements and court documents reviewed by the Daily Record.

The girl told police she and her brother were in the hotel room with Edwin Urbina, 27, whom she identified as her father, while her mother was at work, according to police documents.

She watched, she said, as Urbina used a slipper or a sandal to hit the boy across his body many times. She told police her brother died at the hotel, court records show. Urbina, she said, had beaten the boy several times before that incident as well.

A medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Straw, 28, appeared before state Superior Court Judge Thomas Critchley last week, sobbing throughout the hearing as she pleaded for her release. Critchley ordered that she remain in jail pending the resolution of her case. She is facing charges of endangering the welfare of a child, hindering, and witness and evidence tampering.

Her attorney, Wayne Morse, said Straw is innocent.

"She's never been in trouble a day in her life. She's just trying to put food on the table for her kids," Morse said at last week's hearing. "In no way shape or form did Ms. Straw intend to do any harm to her 3-year-old son. She wasn't using drugs, she wasn't abusing her children and I think to some extent she's being vilified by the statements."

Prosecutors say that on Aug. 12, Straw left the children with Urbina at the Route 10 hotel and went to work at a nearby convenience store. When Straw arrived home the morning of Aug. 13, she made attempts to cover up the incident by removing boxes and bags from the hotel, Tara Wang, a Morris County assistant prosecutor, told the court last week.

Strawdrove Urbina to a residence in Morristown and then drove to the hospital later in a "feigned attempt" to seek medical treatment for her son, Wang said.

Cellphone records show that Urbina texted Straw and instructed her not to mention his name and to deny his involvement in the child's injuries, according to court documents. Straw allegedly deleted contact information on her phone and text message conversations between her and Urbina.

Critchley last week said that although it was not clear whether Straw was aware of the risks of putting her children in Urbina's care, she took critical missteps when she came home after the beating.

There was a "purposeful and substantial cover-up of the killing of her child," Critchley said.

The judge said he was concerned by Straw's alleged attempt to suppress her daughter's testimony and worried that if released, she would make additional efforts to influence the child.

The daughter is now under the care of the state's Department of Child Protection and Permanency and is residing with Straw's mother.

Krystal Straw, charged with covering up for her boyfriend after he allegedly murdered her 5-year-old son in an East Hanover hotel this summer, must testify against him if she hopes to avoid standing trial herself, a prosecutor said Monday during a virtual hearing.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office has offered the 28-year-old Straw 13 years in state prison in exchange for guilty pleas to a pair of second-degree child endangerment charges and hindering prosecution, a third-degree crime.

But that deal is contingent on accused killer Edwin Urbina, 27, of Morristown, accepting a much stiffer plea deal: 50 years in jail with no parole for at least 42 1/2 years.

And that’s a long shot.

“Mr. Urbina is not pleading to 50 years … I can almost guarantee that, having handled cases like this myself,” said Superior Court Judge Stephen Taylor.

Without a plea from Urbina, the couple will be tried together. Straw could face up to 25 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines if convicted of these charges.

Straw’s only out, said Morris Assistant Prosecutor Tara Wang, “would be if there was full and complete cooperation by this defendant, in an agreement to testify at trial against the co-defendant.”

So far, “we’re not anywhere close” to such an agreement, Wang said.
Urbina appeared before Taylor moments earlier, also from the jail. He did not accept his plea offer during that brief hearing. Urbina’s public defender, Sharon Bittner Kean, said she is waiting to review final pieces of evidence requested from the prosecution.

Both defendants are scheduled before Taylor again next month. The judge said he anticipates an April 2022 trial, ahead of a May 1 speedy-trial deadline for these cases.

Urbina faces life in prison without parole if convicted of first-degree murder. A grand jury added an aggravating factor to Urbina’s indictment, mandating that sentence because the victim was younger than 14.

Based partly on a statement from the boy’s 5-year-old sister, authorities say Urbina fatally beat the child–-possibly with a slipper–-early on Aug. 13, 2021.

When Straw came home from her job at a convenience store, authorities contend, she spent two hours packing Urbina’s belongings and dropped him off in Morristown before taking her children to Morristown Medical Center. Her son Liam was pronounced dead soon afterward. His death was ruled a homicide by the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Straw allegedly told her daughter to keep quiet at the hospital. Investigators say Urbina, an ex-convict, directed Straw to deny his presence at the hotel and delete his contact information and text messages from her mobile phone.

Denholtz has indicated she may file motions challenging the admissibility of a lengthy Straw interview at Morristown police headquarters, and of her comments recorded on a police body-worn camera.

An East Hanover mother of two is facing decades behind bars after admitting she lied to police and helped her boyfriend escape after he purportedly beat her 3-year-old son to death at a township hotel in 2021.
Krystal Straw, 29, appeared nervous and dazed on Thursday as she pleaded guilty to seven charges a grand jury levied against her in a November 2021 indictment that also included charges of murder against her live-in partner, Edwin Urbina, 29, of Morristown. Urbina, who is expected to head to trial next month, is accused of using a slipper or sandal to beat the child in the early morning hours between Aug. 12 and Aug. 13 while Straw was working an overnight shift at QuickChek.
Straw admitted Thursday she knew Urbina had physically assaulted her 3-year-old son in the weeks prior to the toddler's death, but had left him and her 5-year-old daughter in his care on the evening of Aug. 12, 2021 while she went to work. Straw said she knew her son was at substantial risk of serious injury or death that evening since she had observed her son complain of pain and discomfort on his body and had been limping due to prior injuries she said Urbina had caused.
Straw, who left the children with Urbina in a room at the OYO Hotel in East Hanover, returned home around 2:15 a.m. on Aug. 13, 2021 after Urbina called and told her the boy was not conscious. Straw, who could not say whether or not her son had already died, was ordered by Urbina not to call 911 or get help and instead forced to clean the room, she said. Urbina told Straw not to tell anyone he was in the hotel room or involved in any way since he had a criminal history, Straw said. Straw would not get in trouble because she did not have a prior criminal record, she said Urbina told her.
After cleaning the room for nearly 2 ½ hours while her daughter watched, admitting she changed her son's clothes in the process, Straw said she helped pack her car with Urbina's personal belongings, and with both children in the car, drove Urbina to his last known residence in Morristown.
Straw admitted she then brought her unconscious and badly bruised child to Morristown Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Knowing a police investigation was underway, Straw admitted she told her daughter "no talking" to avoid implicating Urbina. She also said she deleted Urbina's contact information on her phone and text message conversations between them at Urbina's instruction.
In a hospital waiting room, Straw admitted while speaking to a Morristown police officer, she lied and said she was home alone with the children and woke up to find her son "sick and throwing up." She said her son "fell" and was bruised when she was trying to give him CPR before she rushed him to the hospital, but said Thursday none of it was true.
Straw will be sentenced in March after Urbina's trial is expected to conclude. It is unclear if she will serve as a witness at his trial.

She should have taken the plea deal and testified against the POS.

ETA: she shouldn't have covered up for him in the first place. How could she do that to her own child? She should have called the cops and let the chips fall where they may.

A judge sentenced a former town man to life in prison on Thursday after he was convicted of killing his girlfriend's 3-year-old son and handed the woman an 18-year sentence for putting her children in harm's way and lying to police about what happened.
Edwin Urbina, 29, was denied the possibility of parole and will spend the rest of his life in a maximum security prison.

The judge's sentence for Straw was a slight departure from the 21 years prosecutors sought, while straying a bit further from the 13 years her attorney Tracy Denholtz argued.

Straw, whose sentence came a few short hours after Urbina's in the same courtroom, will serve three consecutive terms that will give her the opportunity to be released on parole in five years.
Urbina, who was not the child's father despite the boy calling him "dad," showed no emotion during the sentence, but was quick to call himself a victim who was wrongly convicted due to the color of his skin.
"I, Edwin Urbina, remain innocent and I write this not to offend anyone, but to be a reminder that slavery ended hundreds of years ago," Urbina read from a yellow piece of legal paper, "Not only was I charged with murder, but my co-defendant, Krystal Straw, a white woman, was not."
Urbina's thoughts appeared scattered as he spoke, stating that he "didn't want anything to do with this situation" and didn't trust trust police and was afraid and "not in his right state of mind." Urbina contended he never disciplined the boy and suggested the boy's prior injuries occurred while he was serving time in prison in the months prior for a series of robberies.
Urbina also took aim at the prosecutors for their portrayal of him as a "barbaric freak" and the judge for being "one-sided," stating that Taylor had denied all motions he filed prior to trial which would have proven his innocence.

His attorney did not offer any factors that would have weighed favorably in his client's case, instead telling the judge, "There's nothing I can say."
