GREENSBURG, Pa. - An 18-year-old Greensburg man has been charged with raping a 5-month-old infant left in his care.

Police say Scott Wade Smith raped the child Friday morning at a home where several people, including the infant's mother, were living.

Authorities say the infant suffered severe injuries and was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where surgery was performed.

Smith is charged with rape of a child, aggravated assault, child endangerment and other offenses. He is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison on $1 million bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

It's unknown whether Smith has a lawyer.

i live not far from where this happened. i am deeply upset by this. i have a granddaughter that is only a month older than this little baby. this man is a monster. i hope that they find out in jail what he did & give him what he deserves. my thoughts & prayers are with this baby & her family.

It seriously makes my stomach churn. My daughter is turning one this weekend, and to think of someone doing something like that to a baby of 5 MONTHS!!!! There isn't a punishment fit enough to give this guy to equal the crime. Even if they gave it to him in prison,ugh...... Don't even want to think about it anymore....
