A Ormond Beach man was arrested on Tuesday after detectives discovered a series of text messages containing a plot to groom and rape a 3-year-old child.

The arrest of Lafe Best, 37, stems from another case involving Best’s friend and sexual partner, Benjamin Worster, 39.

Worster was arrested in January on charges including possession of child pornography.

That case prompted the discovery of texts on Worster’s phone.

The 3-year-old victim and her mother had moved into Worster’s apartment in December.

The victim soon told her mother Worster had touched her.

On Dec. 17, Worster was taken to a hospital after an apparent overdose and the victim’s mother found his phone.

That’s when she discovered a text message thread with someone named Lafe and a description of a plan to groom and rape the 3-year-old girl, whether she was conscious or not.

“Gotta take this opportunity while I can at my age who knows when something like this will land in my lap again” Worster told Best in a text message.

Detectives executed a search warrant at Best’s home and discovered what appeared to be child pornography on his cell phone.

The sheriff’s office said Best lived in a home with two people who have a child who is around 20-months-old. It is not believed at this time that the child was a victim of any abuse.

What the fuck is wrong with this mother .... her child tells her and she doesn't move out ? He actually has the chance to get high and overdoes, before she even looks at his phone for proof ? I would have totally let the police do that ... and just assume that if they were any kind of friend they'd understand the intrusion and forgive me if there was nothing,

While it is a disgusting read I am happy that these pieces of shit documented what they wanted to do so no jury or judge could find reasons not to sentence these two to long prison sentences.

Best's words should do him in he needs to get just as long if not longer than his boyfriend.

Best and his friend and sexual partner, Benjamin Worster, 42, exchanged graphic text messages in which they plotted to groom a 3-year-old girl for sexual abuse and eventually molest and rape her, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The texts began in early December of 2018 when Worster learned a woman and her 3-year-old daughter would be moving in with him as his new roommates. The two men had been texting before the woman and child moved in. They discussed in detail how they would potentially drug the girl, expose her to sexual content and have Best come over to the home so he could have access to her as well, according to the report.

Two days after the woman and child moved in, the girl told her mother Worster had touched her inappropriately. The mother went through Worster’s phone and found the texts along with naked pictures of her daughter and other children, according to law enforcement.

The issue in this appeal would have been whether Lafe Travis Best was correctly designated a sexual predator under section 775.21(4)(a), Florida Statutes (2018), Florida’s Sexual Predators Act. I write only because this case presents the quintessential example of failing to make a specific objection for purposes of preserving an issue for appellate review. The State charged Best with one count of conspiracy to commit sexual battery on a person less than twelve years of age and eleven counts of possession of sexual performance by a child.1 The charging affidavit alleged that Best conspired with another man, Benjamin Worster, to commit molestation upon a three-year-old female child who was residing with Worster, as evidenced by text messages between the two men. Best entered a no contest plea to all counts.
At the sentencing hearing, and in a written sentencing recommendation, Best’s counsel objected to the trial court designating Best a sexual predator because he had no history of predatory behavior, there was no aggravating reason for such a designation, he was not integrally involved in the events, he had never met the child-victim, and such designation “would offend justice.” The State responded that Best was required to be designated as a sexual predator pursuant to section 775.21(4)(a) because he pled to, and was about to be convicted of, a first-degree felony under section 794.011. The trial court designated Best a sexual predator as part of the sentencing order. On appeal, and for the first time, Best argues that he was convicted of only conspiracy to commit sexual battery, not the substantive offense or an attempted sexual battery under section 794.011, and therefore the sexual predator statute does not apply to his conviction. While it might seem intuitive that a person who conspired to have sex with a three-year-old child is the
precise individual appropriate for sexual predator designation, we must examine the plain language of the statute to analyze the argument.
