Five-year-old Josiah Williams had spent just 6 months in the care of his biological father and stepmother when he was found dead last week, according to new details that have surfaced in an arrest warrant affidavit.

Charleston Williams, 25, and wife Crystal Williams, 27, took custody of Josiah because his biological mother is in prison. Under their watch, he became malnourished and suffered severe physical trauma, according to the affidavit.

Josiah had two black eyes, bruises and cuts all over his body, as well as tears behind his ears and large gashes inside his lips, according to the affidavit.

He also showed signs of “prolonged malnutrition,” weighing 38 pounds at the time of his death.

Charleston Williams admitted to beating Josiah with a belt and placing him in “time out” in a closet, but said his injuries were from accidental falls.

He “was adamant that to the best of his knowledge (Josiah) was never struck in the head by anybody in the household,” the affidavit said.

Crystal Williams corroborated her husband's story that Josiah had fallen multiple times that week, but said one of his falls was “intentional” because he was protesting being put in time out, and he “threw himself to the floor and struck his head,” the affidavit said.

The couple's stories diverged when it came to the malnutrition aspect of Josiah's injuries.

Charleston Williams said Josiah was “healthy, even a slightly overweight child” when he came to live with them, but had been refusing to eat, the affidavit said. Crystal Williams said Josiah had been eating regularly and didn't know why he was losing weight. Both denied intentionally starving him.

The Bexar County medical examiner's office still is investigating the cause of Josiah's death. If his death is ruled a homicide, the couple's charges could be upgraded.

Two other children who lived with the couple, an 8-year-old boy from Crystal Williams' previous relationship, and 2-year-old girl that's biologically theirs, were taken into Child Protective Services' custody.

Before the death of 5-year-old Josiah Williams last week, the child had been beaten, taunted and deprived of food while other kids ate in front of him, court documents show.

Details about the boy's suspected abuse emerged after the arrest of Josiah's step-grandmother, Gloria Proo, 48, who is believed to have taken a lead role in disciplining him. Proo was arrested Thursday night on one count of felony injury to a child by omission. Bond was set at $75,000.

Witnesses reportedly told police the child looked “scared, sick fragile and thin” during a barbecue at the family's house in late November. Josiah, who reportedly looked jaundiced and had a scab on his forehead, had been forced to stand in a corner and not move or look at anyone.

When the child looked back, the witnesses said, Proo came up from behind, grabbed him by the back of the head and slammed it against a wall three times.

Police later found holes in a closet wall that appeared to be the size and circumference of a child's head. There was also blood inside the closet.

One of the witnesses said he asked the child to go outside with him to talk, and when he asked the boy to sit next to him, Josiah said he “was not allowed to sit with everyone else because he 'pooped' on the furniture,” the affidavit said.

He was only allowed to have leftover pizza once other children at the party were done eating.

Another witness told police that Proo had once taunted the child with an empty beverage container. Proo allegedly offered the child a grape-flavored drink, but the child declined because he “didn't want to get into trouble.”

After Proo convinced him to take the drink from her, she laughed when he realized the container was empty, the witness said.

Proo is Crystal Williams' mother, and is not biologically related to Josiah Williams but called herself his grandmother.

Sgt. Jim Cole said the investigation revealed Proo was spending hours and sometimes days alone with the child and was taking a lead role in disciplining him, adding that investigators found “a pattern of physical assault that goes above any reasonable standards of discipline.”

Why do men allow their children to be treated this way? What must the other children have been thinking too? Afraid to say anything in case they got the same treatment maybe. I think the Pooh character is one of those people who is only capable of loving her own flesh and blood. She bitterly resented having the care of a child not related to her by blood so she set out to find fault, express anger and hate, and to act upon it. I suspect her daughter was no better, not only resenting a another woman's child being foisted upon her household, but deliberately ignoring the obvious abuse her mother was perpetrating. What I don't understand is what the hell the "father's" excuse is. Oh, not his problem because child rearing is women's work? Or some other cockamamie trash?

I once got into an argument with some woman in the street because I saw her slap her little boy hard for something which was a total accident. What does it take for people to act? How much do they have to see before they do something, or say something? There is NO POINT in going to the police AFTER the child is dead to report what you saw, ffs. How could ANYONE stand there and watch a child be excluded, forced to stand in the corner with his back to the fun and food, and then have his head slammed into the wall for daring to look back at the party?



I really want Proo and her spawn and spawn in law to die.

I hope the other inmates with hold food from this bish and beat her ass on a regular. What angers me even more is that this excuse for a father could allow this piece of trash to mistreat his child. Why take him if you don't want him and if you kill him you are not receiving any benefits for him-so why. I also am angered that a friend saw the mistreatment but put the adults before the child. I hope that person is filled with guilt at his failure in getting help for this child.

Someone should ask her attorney did Josiah get a fair shake, was she fair to him. She plead guilty because she murdered the child and expected just a slap on the wrist.

Before he was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday, a sobbing San Antonio man asked the court and his family to forgive him for not protecting his 5-year-old son, Josiah Williams, who was beaten and so malnourished he weighed 38 pounds at the time of his death.

“I’m asking for their forgiveness. I wasn’t the father I was supposed to be. I’m sorry,” Charleston Williams told Judge Ron Rangel through heavy sobs before he was sentenced to prison. “He was my son! He was my son!”


Williams agreed to a plea deal that would cap his sentence at 40 years in the death of Josiah Williams, who was found bruised, emaciated and unresponsive Dec. 27, 2012, at the home he shared with his father, stepmother, half sister and stepbrother.

His eyes were black and swollen shut and his body showed multiple injuries that were in various stages of healing. The child was said to have been kept in a closet, away from the other children. Adults did not feed him, take him to school or the doctor for care.

Charleston Williams was the third defendant accused in the boy’s death. His wife, Crystal Williams, 35, was sentenced to life in prison in June 2016. Her mother, Gloria Proo, 53, was tried, convicted and sentenced in September 2017, to 88 years in prison for her part in the child’s death.
