A Jacksonville man is now charged with second-degree murder after a 7-week-old baby died following a December 2020 child abuse incident, according to court documents filed in Duval County.

An amended charges document filed Friday states Michael Strahm, 28, killed a family or household member. The document does not specify when the child died.

Although the amended charges document was filed last week, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office transparency site classified the incident as a homicide on Tuesday.

A prior court document from January 2021 said Strahm threw the victim against a wall four or five times from Dec. 6 to Dec. 9, 2020, with a great amount of force; dropped the victim, causing her to hit her head on Dec. 11; and failed to seek medical attention out of fear.

The document also states when the child was examined, she "suffered from head injuries and seizures sufficiently severe to cause anoxic injury to the left side of her brain. Her physical examination revealed evidence of both physical abuse and neglect."

A JSO arrest report from Dec. 19 says Strahm confessed. He was originally arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse and child neglect.

Scarlet Blair Strahm passed peacefully in the loving embrace of her mother on January 3, 2021. Scarlet was born on October 24, 2020. During her two short months here on Earth, she touched many lives and was loved deeply by family and friends. Her life was a gift to us that will live on through the donation of her heart valves to others in need.

That kind of abuse couldn’t have been unknown to anyone living in the house with that baby. The pic looks like a puppy. Too bad the baby didn’t live long enough for the puppy to grow up and become protective. That puppy probably would have done anything to save this child if he’d just been a bit older and more experienced.

It's so hard to look at pictures of that beautiful baby and imagine how anyone could harm a hair on her head let alone break her so badly she dies... how can anyone ever ever do this?? I've read hundreds of these stories and I never come even close to understanding how this could happen. My heart hurts. Sleep peacefully beautiful angel.

Steven Strahm has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his 7-week-old daughter in Dec. 2020.

Strahm was charged in 2020 for the killing of a family or household member. The infant's aunt, Britney Kilzer, confirmed that the victim was his daughter.

The infant, identified by loved ones as Scarlet, spent two weeks in home hospice and died on Jan. 3, according to a GoFundMe page her mother's family set up.

Kilzer said her sister was in a relationship with the suspect, and there was no past abuse to their knowledge.

A JSO arrest report from Dec. 19 says Strahm confessed. He was original

Steven Strahm was sentenced to 23 and a half years in prison for second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
His daughter Scarlet spent two weeks in Hospice before she died.

Strahm took the stand and said the situation was an accident and it has been a struggle for not only the family but also himself.

The medical examiner said the infant suffered head injuries and seizures.
Strahm also gave a statement.

“Even though it was an accident you know, that doesn’t mean I’ll forgive myself for it either way. But I never gave up. I do believe everyone can find peace after this. Everyone can move on. It’s a battle. It’s a struggle for everybody. Including myself,” Strahm said.
