FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — Fayette County deputies said an investigation into a former middle school teacher involving alleged illegal acts with minors led to multiple sex-related charges.

Leonard Dale Varner Jr., 34, of Beach Bottom was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Brooke County, according to a news release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office received complaints about the former teacher at Ansted Middle School and discovered the incidents occurred from 2016 through 2020 with multiple victims, the news release said.

Incidents allegedly took place in Fayette, Kanawha and Nicholas counties.

Varner is charged with soliciting a minor via computer, second-degree sexual assault and sexual assault by a parent, guardian or custodian. The sheriff’s office said additional charges are still being investigated and may soon be pending in Fayette, Kanawha and Nicholas counties.

Makes me glad to be up here in the northern Panhandle, that’s for sure! We haven’t had a teacher raping a student for a couple of years now, since the news of a female middle school teacher having multiple children by one of her students, starting when he was still a minor. And the school and city cop who did time for, and is on the sex offender registry because of his involvement with an underage female student.

Been a lot of activity in Kanawha County over the last six months or so, which is not to say it was quiet for the preceding 12 years.

Please keep in mind I live here and have 5 local new stations that I look at daily as well as a few national outlets. Please don't single out Kanawha Co. It probably looks like a lot more happens here because I post it. If I lived in Pittsburgh you'd probably be saying "there's a lot of activity in Allegheny Co.".
