The pictures are heartbreaking the story behind them is hard to fathom.

Whether eight-month-old Milo Hill will survive is uncertain after police say his father shook him, badly hurting baby Milo.

"He had a stroke that affected both sides of his brain, so three-fourths of his brain is dead,” said Milo’s mother, Hailey Raney. “It's just really time now, if he's going to wake up and if not, he will pass."

While Raney waits in agony, Milo's father, 19-year-old Isiah Hill, appeared in Multnomah County Court Thursday, charged with first degree assault and criminal mistreatment.

In court documents, police say Hill first told them he tripped over a dog Saturday while carrying Milo and fell on top of his son. Milo's mom says her ex-boyfriend told her the same story.

The two share care for Milo, and the baby spends three days a week with his father. Raney says she was on the way to Hill’s home when Hill told her he accidentally hurt Milo.

"Immediately when I saw my son, he was not okay. His eyes were rolled back to his head, lips were already purple. He was moving but it wasn't normal baby movement and he was making a very loud grunting noise,” said Raney.

In the hospital, doctors told the parents Milo’s injuries were inconsistent for a fall and they believed the baby was abused

In court records, police say Hill then admitted to squeezing and shaking Milo and then dropping him on a bed

"He was just the most happiest baby ever. He was all smiles. He loved everybody and anybody. All I’ve ever wanted was a little boy,” said Raney.
Isaiah Hill is booked in jail on first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment charges, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said.

The charges stem from an investigation that started October 10, when first responders were called out to Hill’s Southwest Portland home to find the baby experiencing seizures and having difficulty breathing.

Once the child arrived at the hospital, doctors found that the infant had a “profuse brain injury” and spine damage, court documents said. The child is reportedly still on life support.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Multidisciplinary Child Abuse Team interviewed Hill during their criminal investigation. They say he admitted to shaking, squeezing, and dropping the child on a bed. Officials said he walked away but later noticed the child was having seizures.

The DA’s office referenced court documents that say Hill waited nearly a half hour to call the child’s mother, who in-turn called 911.

this vile monster stole the wee babies smile, his light! What did he hope to accomplish by squeezing and shaking him, did he think it would comfort and quiet him? Nueter him with a rusty, dull butter knife then prison for the remainder of his miserable time on earth! I can understand being upset, but to assault a wee little bittie with intent and with such force that his brain is damaged renders you not fit to live in society!

I don’t know if Chancellor’s brain damage was a severe as what Milo has, but it’s an inspirational story that provides hope for young victims like this who do survive, albeit with life-changing disabilities. If you’re not familiar with the story (or haven’t read up on his progress), Carolina Panther Rae Carruth had his pregnant girlfriend murdered. But the baby survived and this article from 2015 talks about his progress and his joys in life.
