A northeast Alabama man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death of a toddler relative.
Noe Mateo, 26, was sentenced after pleading guilty to a felony murder charge in DeKalb County.
Mateo pleaded guilty to causing the Feb. 21, 2017 death of 19-month-old Juan Francisco-Juan. Mateo, a relative, lived with Juan and his family, in Crossville. Mateo babysat Juan when the child’s mother was working, the authorities said.
Juan was killed by blunt force trauma, court records show. Mateo pleaded guilty to causing Juan’s death while abusing the child, said Bob Johnston, chief deputy district attorney for Alabama’s Ninth Judicial Circuit, which includes DeKalb County.
Mateo’s 20-year sentence for murder will run concurrently with — meaning at the same time as — a 3-year sentence for witness intimidation, court records show.
Before he was indicted in Juan’s death, Mateo pleaded guilty to intimidating witnesses in the investigation.
