Jordan Gruno, 33, of Flint, was arraigned Nov. 23 by Genesee District Judge Vikki Bayeh Haley on two counts of animal killing and torturing, a 4-year- felony, and a single count of animal abandonment/cruelty, a misdemeanor.
Sheriff Robert Pickell said an anonymous tipster on Nov. 18 notified Genesee County Animal Control of dogs that were being left outside at a home on the city’s south side.
“The dogs had not had any care at all for at least a week and probably had not eaten or been fed longer than that,” Pickell told media at his office Tuesday morning. “This is one of those sad cases that people (who) own dogs or animals and don’t care (for) them.”
The investigation revealed the pit bull died and the husky was so malnourished it ate the other dog, Pickell said.
The veterinarian at Genesee County Animal Control found both dogs were malnourished, Pickell said.
Paul Wallace, the county’s animal control director, said the husky was placed on starvation protocol and being fed small amounts of water and food as it recovers.
“When I saw the pit bull eaten and the condition of the husky, you’d almost want to do to the human being what they did to the dog,” Pickell said. “You can’t do that, of course. It’s just another case of some people having animals that ought not to have animals.”
Pickell said the penalty for abusing animals should be greater.
