A heartbreaking diary kept by an 11-year-old girl reveals how she suffered under her parents' brutal fasting regime in the last months before she starved to death.

Perolla Pires was allegedly forced to go without food and water for days at a time by her religious fanatic parents in Brazil.

In 300 handwritten pages of diaries she narrates how her parents made her pray in silence for hours at a time and perform strenuous exercises to 'punish' her while she was already malnourished.

The 11-year-old died in hospital last month, and her 26-year-old mother Aline and 47-year-old stepfather Enri have been charged with causing her death.

Police superintendent Ricardo Mamede said he believed Perolla had suffered 'long-term torture'.

'The step-father has strong religious convictions and believed that the children needed to be saved, needed to become more God fearing and should purify themselves,' the police officer said.

'He claimed this could only happen through fasting.'

The child was allegedly kept locked in her room in the family apartment in Ubatuba and punished with a strict routine when accused of 'bad manners' and 'lying'.

Her eight-year-old bother was also reportedly disciplined and has been taken into care.

Police were alerted to the girl's plight by emergency doctors after her parents took her to a hospital on 24 October, five months after she had last gone to school.

The medical team claimed she arrived lifeless and pale and was pronounced dead on examination.

An autopsy indicated the cause of death as protein calorie malnutrition

The couple initially denied responsibility and there are suggestions they intended to blame doctors.

Mamede said: 'Enri claimed his step-daughter died from anaemia and did not blame himself for had happened. He even claims to this day that he would do it again.'

However, police searching the apartment found the girl's diary hidden in her sparsely furnished room, with only a rubber mat on the floor for a bed, where she had been imprisoned since at least June this year.

The girl's mother apparently broke down when confronted with the diary, which was dedicated to her.

The mother allegedly confessed to 'torturing' and ordering her child to drink water after she begged for food. She later claimed to be 'sorry' for what had happened.

The mother failed her daughter but I dont think she wanted or meant to. Stories like this remind me of how important it is for women to be as independent as possible. I put up with alot of bullshit in relationships that i let go on longer than I should have. Even after id stopped liking the person. You just end up wasting time and having regrets. When youre independent u have way less tolerance for bullshit. Lova is not dependence. Mom will now never be able to fix this and she'll do worse time in her head. Not excusing her I just think its sad. She was weak, he preyed, daughter paid.
