Federal officials say a 28-year-old Native American man has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of a 3-year-old girl on the Ely Shoshone Indian Reservation in Nevada.

U.S. Attorney Nicholas Trutanich said Tuesday that Colon Jackson is in custody pending a detention hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in Reno.

The indictment says the child, identified as Alyanha Bliss was beaten and died Jan. 9 in Ely.

Trutanich and a top FBI agent in Nevada, Ray Johnson, provided few details and declined to describe Jackson's relationship to the girl.

Maria Bliss was arrested on Friday, Jan. 11, on charges of child neglect and obstructing a peace officer.

Bliss is the mother of child Alyahna Bliss, who passed away on Thursday, Jan. 10. Bliss also has three other children.

This isn’t Bliss’s first arrest. She was arrested previously in May of 2017 on a DUI, and in November of 2017 for the charges of child endangerment and disturbing the peace. The charge of child endangerment was dismissed, and Bliss was ordered to attend parenting courses.

According to the indictment, Alyanha Bliss was dropped off at daycare and was later picked up by her mother, to be taken care of by Jackson while she was at work.

The indictment says Jackson later called Alyanha's mother to tell her the child was unconscious.

I guess it was cheaper to get your child beaten to death than pay extra to the daycare provider to keep the child longer.

Ooooo and mom gets some charges too.
Woohoo!

Oh wait, was that culturally insensitive?
To my ears it is Homer Simpson happy...

The United States Department of Justice, District of Nevada sentences Colon Jackson on March 9, 2023.
An enrolled member of the Ely Shoshone Tribe was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Larry R. Hicks to 15 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release, the maximum sentence, for voluntary manslaughter of a three-year-old girl.
Colon Jackson (31) pleaded guilty in December 2022 to one count of voluntary manslaughter within Indian Country.
According to court documents and facts presented in court, on January 9, 2019, on the Ely Shoshone Indian Reservation, the victim’s mother picked her up from day care and took her home so Jackson could care for her while her mother was at work. While the three-year-old girl was in Jackson’s care, he shook and threw the victim’s body. Jackson called the victim’s mother to tell her that the girl was unconscious. The mother came home from work and took the child to the emergency room in Ely. The girl was then flown from Ely to Salt Lake City. She died from the injuries caused by Jackson.
