A husky on Sunday bit off the hand of a 4-year-old boy who was trying to play with the dog through a fence in Layton, authorities said.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City in serious but stable condition, said Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook.

The child had a sock on his hand and reached from his own backyard through a chain-link fence to play with two huskies that live next door, Cook said, when one of the dogs bit down and amputated his hand just above his wrist.

Crews responded to the home but were unable to recover the child's hand.

"We've not found it in the backyard. Our fear is that it may have been ingested by the dog," Cook said.

The dogs, who are "fairly large," have not bit anyone in the past, according to their owners, he added. Animal control officers took both dogs into custody.

The boy's family helped limit his bleeding before crews arrived, and they joined the child at the hospital, according to Cook.

Not blaming anyone here, but uhhhhh
Why were his parents letting him play sock puppets with the dogs thru the fence?

Every dog I've ever had, has had stuffed toys... A child's hand in a sock probably looked like a toy to that dog.

Very sad. Poor little guy. But seriously, who let's their small child play with dogs through a fence?

I got bit by a German shepherd when I was 13. I was babysitting these kids and their dog was playing in the yard with us. A ball went over the fence and I went to jump the fence to get it. Apparently, their dog didn't like that... he jumped up and bit my ass. Pulled me right off the fence. I still have the scars...
So I'm a little leary of dogs and fences....

My brother was attacked that exact same way. I grew up thinking only our dog was weird enough to attack his own kid for climbing on his own fence. Nope. After becoming an animal control officer, I took lots of bite reports. Dogs seem to hate people climbing on fences. Ladders and stairs seem to be fine. But fences, no way.

I definitely feel for the child, but damn. The dogs were taken into custody for this? I hope they're not destroyed.

They were on their own property protecting their own area. I've owned dogs in the past that would have also probably bitten anything breaching our perimeter. Some dogs are highly protective of their family turf.

As has already been stated, the child's parents should not have allowed this kind of play to be happening in the first place.

Some animal control districts I've encountered have destroy policies with animals that maim humans.

Sadly even if they were my dogs (and I'd love them to the ends of the earth!), I'd never be able to trust them around other humans again (let alone children). From a liability standpoint, there aren't a lot of options after an incident like this.

Any dog that bites a human badly needs to be put down. Unless it's fighting for its life or fighting to protect its human.
Not for property.
Yes some dogs dont deserve it or were goaded or teased but that doesn't mean it can be forgiven.
If a dog badly bites a human you can never ever trust them not to again. And you can't take that risk.
My opinion yes, but for good reason. Same with rearing horses. They are either retired permanently from carrying a rider or they are dog meat.

And these are Huskies.
They are very smart dogs, they would know it's a child. They would know it's a child that lives next door. They would know he cannot harm them and isn't trying to. And they would know that the adults and owner are going flip out about it.
And this would not be like a buzzsaw taking a hand in the blink of an eye. This would have taken a few moments. There would have been pulling, growling and screaming and a concerted effort to bite through. A few adjustments maybe.

Huskies are not good pets as a rule. They're working dogs that are bred to run for miles a day over snow pulling a load, they don't hang with owners but in a dog pack outside with hierarchy and places fought for. They also have a strong chase and bite hunt instinct.
So they have very high exercise requirements, you need 8 ft SOLID fences and you need to be very committed to training. They also do best if they have some type of job or mental stimulation.
Working breeds. If you have a lifestyle that caters for that and are dedicated to training them then they can be a very rewarding friend to you.
Most people don't have that lifestyle or commitment though. They looooove the way they look and sound and buy them and don't realise what a destructive force a bored under exercised husky is. Or how they can gauge pretty quick who is dominant, who is important and who is lower placed than they are.

I am not saying this owner was bad but a chain link fence is fucking stupid as fuck and huskies that are biting kids aren't dogs that are satisfied with exercise, attention and mental stimulation and who are definitely willing to risk the wrath of their owner for a little excitement.
Big dogs can cause a lot of damage in a small amount of time and if you don't want your dog put down then you take steps to prevent the possibility. Right from the start of their lives.

Ehhhhhh...... I can only partly agree with this.

Husky/smart dog or not, I think you're giving the dog an awful lot of credit to be thinking in the moment about not only his actions but the potential repercussions and wrath from its humans.

I don't think a dog is really thinking that critically about cause and effect. Obviously none of us saw how this went down, but I am thinking it's more likely the dog just snapped at what was poking through the fence annoying/agitating it in the moment, and this was the unfortunate outcome.

I also don't necessarily agree that it would take much for a medium+ sized dog to remove a 4 year old's hand. It could have just grabbed the hand and shook violently and as the child was pulling one way and the dog was pulling the other; the wrist is a natural weak point. Hate to get that detailed about this, because again I do realize this is tragic... but I think it would take a lot less force than most would assume. Especially on a small child.

I have owned a dog that bit someone before, but in his mind he was 100% justified in doing so and the person who was bit agreed, and apologized to me for creating the situation that resulted in his being bit as I bandaged him up.

I wouldn't have put my dog down because of that one incident, and he went on to be an amazing pet and valued family member for another 14 or so years, without ever developing a further taste for human blood. :hungry:

I am in total agreement that the dogs maybe should have been better contained and overseen. I've always heard that huskies are escape artists and can be climbers, so a chain link fence doesn't seem like the best call there.

I'm surprised that so many people think a 4 year old should have Hovermom always within reach when he's playing in a fenced in yard. Parents likely had a vague eye on him and playing with a sock near a fence usually isn't cause for alarm, especially if the dogs had not bitten before.

The kid could have stuck his hand through the fence in mere seconds, and unless the mother was RIGHT there it may not have been preventable. From everything I've seen, people don't let their 4 year olds out of their sight for long but they also don't chase them room to room and they don't often need an eagle eye when confined to their own property.

Give these people a break, I bet most of you didn't watch your kids to THAT extent, every second of every day, when they were 4 years old either.

The kid had a sock on his hand. I doubt the dog thought about what was on the other side of the sock. Why did the kid have the sock on his hand? Maybe the dog has nibbled on his hand before and he was using the sock so it didn't hurt as much?

Or maybe perhaps this kid and these dogs had played many, many times through the fence. The dog just decided that today was the day he was going go into asshole mode. Quit blaming the kid and the parents since you don't know the story.

More than 100,000 people have signed a petition begging animal workers not to euthanize two dogs which bit off and ate a four-year-old's arm.

In total, 151,000 people had put their names to paper by Thursday morning and were adding signatures at a rate of several hundred every hour.

The dogs, a pair of huskies named Polar and Bear, are at risk of being put down by city officials in Utah after one of them bit off and ate a child's arm on Sunday.

So not just hand but part of arm too. That takes quite some force. And I don't believe he thought it was a chew toy. Maybe for a quarter of a second but as his mouth touched it the scent and feel would have told him differently. Even with a sock over it.
He should be put down. He ate a little kids arm. Imagine being the parents and child and having to see that dog every day next door. And being frightened if he got out somehow.
This is the owners fault. Chain link fence ffs.

If the council don't put him down and I was the parent then I bloody would.

The Davis County Animal Control sent a second press release indicating the owners of the dogs have surrendered their dogs to Davis County and the process of finding an animal rescue or animal sanctuary have begun.

Initial Update:
The owners of two dogs involved in biting off the hand of a neighbor child have been cited.

In a press release issued by Rhett Nicks, director of Davis County Animal Control, the owners of the two dogs met with representatives from Davis County Animal Care and Control in relation to the case.

During this meeting, the owners were given an offer to relocate the dogs into an animal rescue or animal sanctuary instead of pursuing action through the courts.

The dog owners refused and were subsequently cited for two counts of possession of dangerous animals and two counts of abatement of public nuisance animals.

The release did not indicate any other details about the investigation into the incident itself or what additionally would happen to the dogs if the owners refused to release them.

The mother of the 4-year-old Utah boy who lost his right hand and most of his forearm after a husky bit him on March 3 responded on Facebook after Davis County Animal Care and Control announced the dogs will be transferred to a sanctuary or rescue.

Hope Brown said in her post that her son Austin has returned home and that his doctors’ work to save his elbow joint could prove invaluable for a future prosthetic.

Brown added Austin needs 24-hour care and will need multiple surgeries in the future as his arm tries to grow.

Additionally, Brown said her family has received threats and hateful messages online but thanked those who have supported and reached out to her and her family during this time.

A child is maimed for life, and the petition to save the dogs is using pics of them as adorable puppies to pull at peoples' heart strings. Dog loving assholes are threatening the maimed kids family, ffs. There is NO way this kid and this family should have to continue to live next door to and see daily the dog that bit has hand and arm off and maimed him for life. Priorities, people.

Hopefully they sue the owners and get a shit ton of money and move out of that house.

The dogs ate his arm and hand. They should be put down.

The dogs are being sent somewhere, so he won't be having to see them everyday.

People buy huskies because they are € modern", just like Labrador and french Bulldog types ( which are so inbred and disabled from birth, it's a disgrace, they took from these dogs all a dog is made of. They can't sniff nor walk properly nor breathe) Stupid people don't understand dogs have needs. Huskies have to run long distances if not they become evil. People think dogs are furry items to play with. But dogs are predators. Ever been. You have to know what they need.
