Sentenced: 1 They Killed After Car Plows Through Protesters On Closed Seattle Freeway

A car drove onto a closed freeway early Saturday and struck two people in a crowd protesting against police brutality, killing one and critically injuring the other, authorities said.

Summer Taylor, 24, of Seattle died in the evening at Harborview Medical Center, spokesperson Susan Gregg said.

Taylor and Diaz Love, 32, of Portland, Oregon, were hit by the car that barreled through a panicked crowd of protesters on Interstate 5 early Saturday morning, officials said.

Dawit Kelete of Seattle drove the car around vehicles that were blocking I-5 and sped into the crowd about 1:40 a.m., according to a police report released by the Washington State Patrol. Video taken at the scene by protesters showed people shouting "Car! Car!" before fleeing the roadway.

Kelete is in custody after he fled the scene. The motive was unclear as of Saturday morning, but officials said impairment was not a factor. Kelete, 27, was charged with two counts of vehicular assault, according to KIRO-TV. Bail has been denied.

The highway had been closed for over an hour when the car drove through the crowd. Washington State Patrol tweeted out images of the car involved, a white Jaguar that had damage to the bumper and windshield.

Washington State Patrol Captain Ron Mead said at an early-morning press conference that the interstate had been closed for protests 19 days in a row, the Seattle Times reported. Mead said Saturday that the interstate is "simply not a safe place" for protests.

Love is in serious condition in the intensive care unit, Harborview, Gregg said.

Love was filming the protest in a nearly two-hour-long Facebook livestream captioned "Black Femme March takes I-5" when the video ended abruptly; with about 15 seconds left, shouts of "Car!" can be heard as the camera starts to shake before screeching tires and the sound of impact are heard.

A graphic video posted on social media showed the white Jaguar racing toward a group of protesters who are standing behind several parked cars, set up for protection. The car swerves around the other vehicles and slams into the two protesters, sending them flying into the air.

The driver, who was alone, fled the scene after hitting the protesters, Trooper Chase Van Cleave told The Associated Press. One of the other protesters got in a car and chased the driver for about a mile. He was able to stop him by pulling his car in front of the Jaguar, Van Cleave said.

Troopers arrived, and the driver was put in custody, Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead said.

Kelete was described by officers as reserved and sullen when he was arrested, according to court documents. He also asked if the pedestrians were OK, the documents say.

Shit, thanks for the video link ... (sort-of). I downloaded it to look closer.

The reflection of the brake lights can be seen in the humidity. The brake lights were definitely on at 7.9 seconds. The driver is not fully in control of the car at that time, he is steering harder to the left than the car can really do, and the rear end is sliding out to the right. This would be typical of a real wheel drive car in that circumstance. He hits the first pedestrian at 8.3 seconds in, the second one at 8.5. The car slows down due to braking, and the brake lights go out at 10.4 seconds while the car's still moving forward at a much slower speed.

It was nighttime driving, there was no traffic jam associated with these cars blocking the road, and no emergency vehicle lights that I can see.

The driver leaving the scene is not proof positive that the whole thing was intentional. People respond to horrific events in different ways. I think it would be best not to make assumptions about how much intention may have been in that event, and instead, give the investigation some time to proceed.

I wonder if the driver was running a dash cam.

Funny, I don't recall highways being closed as a courtesy for street racers (who also use highways at night for unconventional purposes). The street racing was safer than this, however.

If he is a Somali immigrant, I would not expect him to have had links to BLM or its sentiments, or to be genuinely pro or con. It's a totally different cultural background. The Somali immigrants I have seen in Finland have almost exclusively been Muslim and in that circumstance they're very focused on their religion, seemingly to the exclusion of other interests and causes.

It can in fact be possible to evade police in a car like he was driving, if you do it right.

I have a guess to make. He decided to do a "fuck the police" and went around them, more or less dared them to try to catch them. He believed he could outrun them and get away, and in the circumstance of a clear road ahead, this could have been a correct belief. But he didn't realize the road ahead was ENTIRELY blocked by protester's cars. When he came around the curve, he saw the cars and knew he needed to go around or pretty much be dead. But then he finds out the hard way that protesters were in the same space as his only open path. Next was: splat.

You cannot do it 100% of the time but if you are crafty and wise, there are circumstances where it can be done.

It doesn't even require a fast car if the circumstance is right. I am aware of someone who successfully evaded state police in a Ford Fairmont one time.

I have heard that nighttime is very helpful, and understanding how to not activate your brake lights while doing things that require you to slow down. I've heard of some people, on really fast cars, building a kill switch into their brake lights as a strategic tool for this. It's also possible to build a kill switch for all of the rear lights and running lights, leaving headlights normal.

It could also be possible on an unmodified car to turn off the running lights and headlights with the regular dash controls while retaining availability of high beams as necessary. But that would not be for high speed anything, that would be for getting off the highway safely and unseen.

Having some sort of head start tends to make a difference.

BTW helicopters run out of fuel long before you will.
