The body of a young Alabama woman reported missing more than a month ago was recovered Monday in a well.

The discovery of 20-year-old Marka “Willoe” Watkins’ body in Tuscaloosa, Ala., also resulted in the arrests of two men on murder charges, according to reports.

Watkins was reported missing June 15 by her grandmother, according to the Birmingham News, which also reported that she was once involved in high school pageants

Her alleged killers, Kendal Tyler Battles, 29, and Joseph Brandon Nevels, 20, were also charged with abuse of a corpse, Fox 6 Birmingham reported.

“We believe Watkins was at one of the suspect’s residences in the 20000 block of Tanya Drive in Tuscaloosa County when she was assaulted and killed,” Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit assistant commander Capt. Kip Hart said, according to the News. “The suspects then drove her to the address on Will Walker Lane to dispose of the body.”

Investigators believed at the time of the disappearance that she had been murdered, according to the paper.

A tip led to the discovery, the News reported.

If the month old corpse was found in a well, does that mean there could be some poor suckers drinking and bathing and cooking in her corpse juice?

From the link...

Authorities said her mother was bludgeoned to death four years ago by three friends who wanted access to her boyfriend’s food stamps, the paper reported. The friends face capital murder charges.

Is this related I wonder? Or is it just a family who surrounds themselves with bad people? Seems unlikely that it’s pure coincidence and that the family is full of saints.

Edit: link says the woman hung out with shady people. Still wonder if the mother’s murder is related though.

A hand dug country well is at least 4 ft across, enough room for a man to get down in the hole to dig it out. You could realistically get a cow down in there. A lot of times old wells are only covered by a sheet of plywood and some rocks , so not difficult to get to get it open. they should be filled in but nobody goes to that much trouble.

A 4th person has been arrested.

Tuscaloosa charged 30-year-old Monic Battles, wife of one of the three original suspects in the case.

Well, well, well...

Kendal “Tyler” Battles, 31, has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of 20-year-old Willoe Watkins who was beaten, strangled, wrapped in garbage bags, dumped in a well and then covered in cement.

Battles will not be eligible for probation.

Watkins was reported missing June 15, 2019, by her grandmother. Her body was discovered Monday, July 29, 2019, about 30 feet down in an abandoned well in Tuscaloosa County. It took investigators more than 12 hours to excavate the well and recover her body.

Authorities described the recovery as Watkins’ body as a “brutal scene,’’ and said it took planning and multiple people to carry it out.

Devon Trent Hall, 30, pleaded guilty in July to murder. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Battles’ wife, Monic Battles, and a fourth suspect, Joseph Brandon Nevels, have not yet gone to trial. Nevels told investigators in 2019 that Watkins’ stole his cell phone and he got upset and hit her in the head with shotgun.

The Battles, Nevels and Hall beat Watkins with their hands, feet and a baseball bat, Nevels told investigators, according to court record, which said, “Nevels stated Hall strangled her to death with a cord.”

Her mother, Miranda Michelle Lynch, was found dead in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor of a mobile home on Aug. 7, 2015. Police said she was held against her will for days and repeatedly beaten before she died of her injuries.

Authorities at the time said Lynch was killed by three female friends who wanted access to her boyfriend’s food stamps. Watkins’ father also is dead, and she was particularly close to her grandmother.

Susan Otts, Tamara Giarruso and Karen Kirby

Kirby pleaded guilty to intentional murder. She was sentenced to life in prison.

Otts pleaded guilty to second-degree assault. She was given a suspended sentence of 15 years in prison, with one year of supervised probation.

Tamara Luffman Giarrusso, was originally charged in the crime but her charges were later dropped.

Kirby said there was a struggle between her and Lynch on the morning of Aug. 7, but she claimed self-defense, Watkins said. Kirby told police the fight ended in the bathroom, while she was using everything she could find to hit Lynch. She said she finally wrapped her legs around Lynch from behind on the floor, and grabbed the wooden birdcage. Kirby told officers she pressed it against Lynch's face to hold the woman in a position for several hours before Lynch stopped struggling.
