A 13-year-old Florida boy was hospitalized Friday after he was impaled by an umbrella at a Massachusetts beach, authorities said.

Gloucester first responders responded to a call around 1:40 p.m. Friday after reports that an umbrella at Good Harbor Beach had become dislodged and struck a young victim in the left shoulder, Boston 25 reported.

“Went up in the air and hit a couple of ladies in the head and came down and impaled the poor boy right in the armpit and there was blood everywhere,” witness Laura Wood, of Rawley, told the news station.

An EMT and a nurse who were already at the beach rushed to help the teenager -- who was visiting from Florida -- until first responders arrived.

Doesnt appear to be a single cloud ijn the sky
Do you really believe the umbrellas are to block out the shade from clouds?

Here's how it works....No Clouds = More Sun (that shiny thing in the sky) THAT = people want some shade, sometimes in the form of an umbrella, perhaps a hat and sometimes even a hand above the eyes. I'm really doubting you've ever been to a beach now buddy.

That's dumb as shit.

Usually ive seen people just laying out in the sun like fucking idiots who want sun cancer. Always found that dumb.

If i wanted to escape the sun, i wouldnt be at the beach in the first fucking place. There's no trees at most of em afterall(although my favs were at lakes near forests/heavily wooded areas and did in fact have shaded areas). Otherwise, if i want shield from the sun while intentionally and knowingly venturing out into a sunny environment like a beach, i'd put on my fucking hat or a shirt.

So you really didn't know the idea behind the beach umbrella? Come on...it's just us here, admit it...I gotta know lol

ive seen them at pools, similar to like peoples yard tables/picnic tables.

Ive seen the type in this article in pictures and in movies and shit, no beach ive been to has had em though. Kinda figured they were just bullshit or perhaps some european weird nonsense. Again, every beach ive been to, people CHOSE to be IN the sun. It's whyu people go to fucking beaches it seems. Most folks arent swimming/playin in the water, which i always found irritating and weird.

So you ARE unfamiliar with the beach umbrella...that's ok. I'm from FL so I know how it works. If you don't wan't to go blind from the sun and still enjoy a day at the beach THEN you employ the mighty beach umbrella. It also helps you not instantly burst into flames if you're one of those pasty white Irish people...however still use sunscreen because you can and will burn even with the umbrella. Plus there is the heat factor...110 in the sun and 90 in the shade is nice when the kids are playing in the water and you just want to chill on the beach (code for looking at cuties in bikinis).

Leave Florida and come to Massachusetts, they said, it'll be fun, they said. Ummmm yeah.
This is why I'd rather be at South Beach.

I being of Irish ancestry, do this yearly dance...Go to the beach/Pool, turn into a creature that resembles a well cooked lobster. Then I peel, resembling a lizard. Then, I remember I DO NOT TAN!
I enjoyed Cork more than Cali. That's my Irish upbringing as well.

Floridians too stupid for sunglasses? Not surrprising.

Get in the fucking water if you want to cool off, it's a fucking beach.

There are many things to enjoy at the beach besides being cooked. People apparently use beach umbrellas and enjoy them, so I'm not really sure what the argument is here. People just shouldn't like the things that they like, I guess??

You can sometimes get people to stop DOING things that they enjoy, if those things are proven to be dangerous or harmful (use of stabby beach umbrellas possibly included). But telling people they have no reason to enjoy the things that they enjoy is utterly pointless! It reeks of bitterness and trollery.

All that being said, I will most definitely be keeping an eye on the wind if I ever choose to enjoy the sights, sounds, and sensations of the beach near a nice shady umbrella.
