A damaged tanker truck exploded in Tanzania Saturday, with at least 62 people burning to death, making it one of the worst incidents of this kind in the country.

At least 70 people more were injured, many suffering from serious burns, in the incident in the town of Morogoro – about 120 miles west of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's economic capital – as people were trying to siphon fuel out of the tanker truck.

Tanzanian government spokesman Hassan Abbasi said the news of the deaths was “received with sadness” and sent condolences to the families of the victims.

Witnesses told the Associated Press that a crowd had gathered around the fuel tanker after it was involved in an accident early Saturday. People then rushed to try to siphon fuel, but the tanker burst into flames.

“The fire was huge and it was challenging to rescue victims,” Daniel Ngogo, who saw the explosion, told Reuters. “The situation is really bad. Many people died here -- even those who were not stealing fuel -- because this is a busy place.”

People getting killed in explosions while stealing fuel from incapacitated tankers are fairly frequent in East Africa, though the Saturday explosion is among the deadliest in Tanzania. Those stealing the fuel usually sell it to motorists for cheap.

So a tanker truck is involved in an accident, and the first thought of a hundred or more people was "let's steal the gas". Such a lack of morals, no wonder some of these places are such violent hell holes.

How do you know that was the FIRST thought/reaction? article said the tanker was crashed for days when this occurred. Im sure the occupant was already helped.

And if your choice is walk 10 miles for the things you need cuz there's no other means to get guzzaline, either due to access or due to you having no money, is it really that imorall to try and siphon some?

Stealing from an oil company ranks pretty low on the "shocking, despicable lack of moral fiber" scale i think.

Fucking hell, it's a true insane dystopia there. All we need now is Lord Humungus.

I too was intending on making a Roadwarrior reference, although i was leaning more towards something with the tanker.

This is funnier.

I have images of them siphoning it off til their bodies burned then the next one in line takes over.
Disgusting when fuel and mobile phones mean more than life itself......

(Reminds me of when someone lost their mobile down the toilet, only for three people to die trying to retrieve it)......

Wasteless........

I'd be willing to bet you have never visited a country that isnt giving free iphones to people on welfare. There are countries that even the "rich" have less than the truly destitute in America.

Stealing gas isn't the same moral conundrum as murder or some other nefarious thing. Sometimes you do what you have to to survive.

I'll share with you a situation similar that happened to me and fuckin eh I stole it.

I got up earlier than normal one morning, standing in my kitchen groggily making coffee before I had to head to work and I hear this squeeling sound. Like nails on a chalkboard. Look outside the kitchen window to see a fully loaded logging truck sliding backwards down the hill I lived on directly towards me. I got lucky and my ditch is pretty deep but the part were my driveway is was built up, the left set of wheels went into the ditch and then slammed into the part thats built up. Caused the entire truck to flip over. Scattered logs all the way to the house behind mine, which happened to be my parents house were I'd dropped my daughter off about 15 minutes earlier. The truck missed my house by feet when it rolled over.

If things hadnt happened how they did..I wouldnt be here today. I went out to get the stamp number off the logs and take pictures only to find out that the logs were unstamped- my parents own a logging company so I knew what to look for - which makes it an illegal load. Never mind the fact that he didn't have his brakes set proper. The company the guy hauled for tried to come get the load of logs which was worth about $50k..I told them to get their truck off my property and not to touch the logs. I was keeping them. They tried to throw a fit and I reminded them I could very easily phone forestry and have them come check it out, along with the cops and DOT.

Morals be damned...I chopped that wood up the same day and had firewood for the rest of the winter!

Seriously... You really think a lack of morals is what's responsible for the problems in third world countries? I don't even know where to begin with this...

Shitty, shitty situation. Burns are some of the most horrendous wounds you can suffer, in terms of how long you will suffer before merciful Death comes for you.

I don't blame you. But strong-arming someone who did something illegal into compensating you for damage to your property isn't stealing in my book. They made a calculated risk-based decision and chose to give you the logs.

While stealing necessities doesn't rank very high on my crime totem pole, and if it was my gas truck, I'd not prosecute needy locals for salvaging the fuel, theft is still theft and if these folks hadn't been helping themselves to someone else's property, they wouldn't have gotten burnt up.

“The situation is really bad. Many people died here -- even those who were not stealing fuel -- because this is a busy place.”

Or something.

Just from my experience with fuel drivers in that shit hole part of the world.

Most of them actually have to 'buy' their load from the depot and they get their money back depending whether or not their load makes the grade with the customer. Most are insured against accidents (including loss of load) but the loads themselves aren't usually insured against theft (it's child's play to game the system).

Looking at it from a truck drivers perspective; torching the load and frying a bunch of opportunistic thieves - double win. Plus the added bonus that folks might think twice before swarming a fuel truck again.

Yes, it's that fucked up over there.

lmao thats the thing. There was no real damage done to my property. Few dents in the lawn. It took longer to drive the loader around from my parents than it did for me to smooth the dents. The way I saw it was - the wood fairy stopped by. I didnt have to pay $300 for a pickup truck load or pay my parents to take from their blocks. It was straight up greed. Took the entire day but I chopped it up small enough that they didnt even want it back because they couldnt have sold it to the mill at that size

Wow, I was expecting a "they are just africans who cares" response.

Jack actually does have a heart! :D

Dont make any mistakes now. My level of care for stupidass views/opinions/falsehoods i come across on message boards is about equal to how little i can about Africans. I can hate Africa and let someone know theyre an idiot at the same time.
