As Americans prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, their pride in the U.S. has hit its lowest point since Gallup's first measurement in 2001. While 70% of U.S. adults overall say they are proud to be Americans, this includes fewer than half (45%) who are "extremely" proud, marking the second consecutive year that this reading is below the majority level. Democrats continue to lag far behind Republicans in expressing extreme pride in the U.S.

These findings are explored further with new measurements of the public's pride in eight aspects of U.S. government and society. American scientific achievements, military and culture/arts engender the most pride, while the U.S. political system and health and welfare system garner the least.

U.S. adults' extreme pride in being American has been steadily weakening in recent years, and the current reading, from a June 3-16 Gallup poll, marks the lowest point to date. However, the latest two-percentage-point decline from last year's 47% is not a statistically significant change.

The latest overall declines in patriotism are largely driven by Democrats, whose self-reported pride has historically been lower and has fluctuated more than Republicans'. Democrats' latest 22% extreme pride reading is the group's lowest in Gallup's 19 years of measurement, and is half of what it was several months before Donald Trump's 2016 election victory.

For their part, most Republicans have remained extremely proud of their country, and the latest 76% reading is just 10 points below the high recorded in 2003. Even when Barack Obama was in office, Republicans' extreme pride never fell below 68%.

Independents have historically been less proud of the U.S. than Republicans have been; currently, 41% express extreme pride -- which is, by one point, the lowest reading in the trend.

The greatest disparities in the views of Republicans and Democrats on these eight aspects are seen on American economic achievements (89% of Republicans vs. 64% of Democrats are proud), the U.S. political system (42% of Republicans vs. 25% of Democrats) and the U.S. military (98% of Republicans vs. 84% of Democrats).

I'm proud to be American, even though there are things I don't like about this country.

For example, I don't like how our political system right now is just an us vs. them situation. Each side just wants to be contrary to the other, and nobody seems to care how it's affecting the people. I'm legitimately scared that we're headed for another Civil War.

As a registered Democrat whose politics are left-leaning (although I don't like the Democratic Party) I hate the fact that the extremes on both sides can't seem to have a conversation without restoring to name-calling, i.e. 'libtards' and 'rethugnicans' - it's beneath us. We're all better than this. I want my America to be a place where we look out for each other, no matter what race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, political party or any other differences we have. I don't see that happening now, and it bothers me.

Has anyone noticed that most of the people who aren't proud of being an American wants the country to give them stuff and the most of the people who are proud of being an American doesn't expect to be given anything from, or has given service to, the country?

I've noticed that in some cases.

I don't want to be given anything. I was raised to have a good work ethic, and I have worked for everything I've ever gotten. I didn't like my career, I taught myself how to do something else so I could change it. I didn't like my situation, I changed it. I have the freedom to do that - to better myself, and I love that.

Wow, this aged like milk.

People must vote for a president who will represent all Americans, not the guy who’s going to stick it to the people you hate. Or stab our long term allies in the back.

Our last two presidents were clearly motivated by love for this country, even if you disagreed with their politics. The only love the current one has is for the almighty dollar, which means he can be (has been?) bought.

Really, guess it depends on we’re you stand

Obama's Weaponization of Government
There is a dangerous arrogance of power among the President and senior-level Democrats that should concern every American.
Last year, Lois Lerner, the IRS’ former director of Tax Exempt Organizations, publicly acknowledged the political, predatory and punitive actions of the agency that led to the harassment and intimidation of conservative groups.
Last week a senior United States Senator gave a speech stating that the IRS should be used to target and punish groups that disagree with the Democratic Party’s political agenda. Sen. Chuck Schumer stated, “…there are many things that can be done administratively by the IRS and other government agencies — we must redouble those efforts

Then there’s the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, once headed by Elizabeth Warren, also now a key cog in the Obama Administration’s effort to regulate industries and personal decision-making. The CPFB is rapidly becoming, next to the Justice Department, the Administration’s agency of choice for extending the reach of government into our daily lives and stretching the limits of the law. Unfortunately for Americans, this little-known agency is housed as part of the Federal Reserve so it exists outside of the direct pervue of Congress. How convenient for the President.

Obama didn't even have a 401k or IRA when he was elected and now he is fabulously rich, rinning only in those elitist circles where everyone agrees with him.. He has profited mightily. He's followed the classic political path. I'm sure he could be bought.
