A Phoenix man was arrested Friday on suspicion of child abuse after a baby girl in his care died from severe injuries, authorities said.
Adrian Vincent Moreno, 26, is suspected of one count of child abuse in connection with the severe injury and subsequent death of his girlfriend's toddler.
Police were called to an apartment on reports of an injured child, said Sgt. Jonathan Howard, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department.
Officers were met by Moreno, his girlfriend, and her daughter, 17-month-old Amelia Gutierrez, who had severe injuries, Howard said.
The couple gave accounts to officers that were inconsistent with the injuries officers observed on the child, he said.
Amelia was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, with severe head and internal injuries. She died in the hospital on Thursday, Howard said.
A police investigation showed the child's mother had left Amelia in the care of Moreno for a brief time while she went to the store. Moreno later called her and reported that the child had been injured after falling off a couch, the child's mother told police.
Sgt. Jon Howard with the Phoenix Police Department says something wasn’t adding up.
“The baby had severe head trauma the baby had severe internal abdominal trauma. "The injuries were not consistent with the story...that the suspect told us."
