A Lynchburg woman has been charged with child abuse following police investigation into her 22-month-old daughter’s injuries and subsequent death.

Nightmara Ashitty Loon you mean.
Put a nailgun to her forehead and nail some sense into her post haste.

A 22-month-old girl who died last week was admitted to hospital as a baby but later released to her mother - who is accused of abuse.
Court documents show Amarah Lane was brought to Lynchburg General Hospital by her mother Fantasia Lane with burns on her face and swollen hands at just three weeks old.

But authorities later released Amarah back into the custody of her mother after nine months.

The documents also state her mother, Fantasia Lane, was prone to depressive episodes and that DSS would need to watch her closely.
Officers were called to Lynchburg General Hospital on Saturday, August 11 after Amarah had again been brought in by her mother.
Her injuries were so severe that she was later transferred to Charlottesville hospital, where she died last Thursday.

The Criminal Investigations Unit has now charged the child's mother for felony child abuse.

Fantasia Lane's ex-boyfriend Maurice Puryear, 28, said he believed she would regularly cover up her abuse of the child.

According to Puryear, he would often find Amirah covered in cuts and bruises.

'Fantasia would blame it on the baby, like the baby hurt herself,' said Puryear.

Amarah Lane came into the world October 22, 2016 and she’s currently buried in Potter’s Field at Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg.

Family Members and friends say it is a tragic end to a complicated life and they did everything they could prior to her death to warn the Department of Social Services about her abuse and looked into how they could take custody of the child.

"Just thinking that child was in that house with this monster, and she just hitting her and probably yelling at her and the baby had no escape," laments Cynthia Puryear, Amarah's grandmother.

Court documents show shortly after Amarah was born, Child Protective Services got involved with her family and requested an emergency removal from her home due to abuse and neglect while she was living with her mother.

The child wound up at Lynchburg General with burns on her face and swollen hands.

Lane has now been charged with felony murder, child abuse, and child endangerment.

State documents show a doctor diagnosed Lane with Major Depressive Disorder, which means she feels overwhelmed, highly?stressed,?and that her highly elevated scores would predict future child abuse and that DSS would need to watch her closely because they believed the child abuse could happen again.

Social Services worked extensively with the Lane family, but they’re not legally able to talk about a client, but they explained there is a statewide shortage of social workers.

Those who loved Amarah, though, can’t stop thinking the agency missed something.

"I think we're always in a situation where we could use more people to investigate these calls. I don't think that the agency can be responsible for the actions of individuals," said Tamara Rosser, the Director of Lynchburg Human Services

But that is pretty much what your job description is. Do your job, or quit if you can't stop doing lunch long enough to actually follow up on abuse allegations.

It will always be difficult to save children when the rights of the parents to the child are honestly more important than the child's right not to be abused.

I am sure mistakes were made but that occurs when you want to hire people based on factors that have nothing to do with their skills, understanding and willingness to advocate for children.

We should also start saying to men stop laying on top of crazy, mean and easy bitches it usually does not turn out that well for you or your children.

Fantasia Ashante Lane, 21, will spend 23 years in prison after pleading guilty in the death of her 22-month-old daughter.

Doctors diagnosed Amarah with hypernatremia, or a high concentration of sodium in the blood that can come from lack of hydration or eating food with high salt content. Harrison said she also suffered lack of oxygen to the brain.

While treating Amarah, caregivers noted U-shaped bruises to her thighs and arms, scratches and scrapes to her face and head and the fact that she was generally unresponsive, Harrison said.

Amarah became even less responsive on Aug. 12 and was declared brain-dead on Aug. 16, Harrison said. The medical examiner who performed an autopsy on Amarah found she died of complications from hypernatremia and the manner of death was “undetermined.”

The child’s death was the end to a saga of neglect and abuse, according to Harrison.

Lane first lost custody of her daughter when she was three weeks old because of injuries from neglect. Lane was susceptible to explosive episodes of anger following long periods of frustration that Harrison said reportedly came from feeling overwhelmed and having no one to help her care for Amarah. Harrison said Lane admitted to spanking Amarah with a flip flop and other objects on hand.

Katie Sheldon, Lane’s attorney, said in court there are two theories to the case but declined to elaborate after the hearing ended. She said the plea agreement was a fair outcome for her client.

Yet another massive failure on the part of CPS. And then the flippant remark about how the agency is not being responsible for the mother’s actions. Well yeah you kinda are moron, because you people were put in charge of that babies safety. Just like when a mother should also be held responsible when they leave their child in the care of someone they know/ or should have known is abusing them.

This.

When my niece first entered foster care because both parents were arrested for unrelated serious crimes, they were in county jail. Because they were separated and both had their parental rights intact. They both had visitation 2 days a week. So four days a week she was taken out of school, taken to the jail to visit one parent or the other. She literally missed all of 3rd grade. So fucked up when the parents rights override even the basic needs of the child.

A judge found a Lynchburg man guilty for his involvement in the death of a 21-month-old girl.

On Tuesday, Judge F. Patrick Yeatts found Maurice Tyrone Puryear guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in connection with the Aug. 16, 2018, death of Amarah Lane.

Puryear was charged on Feb. 26 with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for his role in encouraging the abuse of Amarah.

The day before Amarah was admitted to the hospital, Fantasia Lane sent Puryear text messages in which she said that Amarah fell out of a bed and hit her neck hard, according to Harrison.

Harrison described the chain of text messages between the two:

  • Over a three-hour period, Lane sent texts relaying Amarah's condition to Puryear in which she described Amarah as quiet, unable to walk, unable to lift her head and in pain.
  • Puryear instructed her to tie Amarah back to the bed "but this time to her ankle so that she can't move at all."
  • He continued to encourage Lane to tie Amarah to the bed by her ankles and said they would take Amarah to the doctor once their work schedules allowed for the appointment.
In court Tuesday, Puryear testified that the prosecution blew these messages out of proportion.

He claimed that he took care of Amarah and did nothing wrong and that he never saw signs of Fantasia abusing Amarah.

When he got home the night of Aug. 10, 2018, Amarah appeared to be asleep in her dark room, so he kissed her and left the room.

The next morning, when he picked her up, he saw her head flop back, which is when he realized something was wrong, according to Harrison.

Puryear argued that he did not willfully do anything to Amarah and did not believe Lane tied her up.

The judge disagreed with Puryear's testimony and found that his texts fit the prohibited conduct under the contributing to the delinquency of a minor statute.

Yeatts sentenced Puryear to a year in jail, the maximum sentence for the charge.

A loved one released a statement to 10 News on behalf of Amarah Lane's family:

"The family was not aware of the sentence of Mr. Maurice Puryear today. It does not bring peace, still, to the family. Amarah would have been three next week. The family continues to heal daily in her passing. We would like for the community to continue to pray"
-- Kenyatta "Yaya" Spencer, on behalf of Amarah Lane's family

Sometimes the fantasy and the reality of a child can be two different things for a parent.

Whether she disliked the father of her child is actually irrelevant; it is that she liked the man she was dating more than her child.

This woman used that child to entice and enthrall the man she was in a relationship.

There is a sickening control aspect where the mother (in cases can be father) will not surrender the child to a safer living situation.

I know I and others usually say it is because of benefits the child brings into the home but I also think the prospect of a child to control, manipulative and harm is an aphrodisiac to some men and women.

The boyfriend of a mother who killed her daughter has been found guilty for his role in the girl's death.

Maurice Tyrone Puryear was found guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class 1 misdemeanor, on Tuesday, October 8.

A judge sentenced Puryear to a year in jail, the maximum sentence for the offense.

Fantasia Ashante Lane was sentenced to 23 years on charges of murder, child abuse, and child endangerment after the death of her 22-month-old daughter Amarah Lane

His sentence is a joke.

Instead of telling this woman to bring her daughter to the hospital he told her to tie the baby to the bed.

The scariest part is he will find another woman probably with kids that is willing to lay up with him.
