Stepmother Mckenley Yadon, 24, has been arrested for investigation of aggravated murder in the death of a toddler two months ago.

On March 14, officers were called to a home on reports of an unresponsive child. The caller reported the incident as a choking, according to an affidavit.

But the officer who responded to the home reported the 3-year-old "had been down for a period of time," police wrote. The officer saw dark purple and black bruising around the girl's left ear, the affidavit states, and "it was immediately apparent that these injuries were not consistent with the details initially provided for the medical response."

The toddler was pronounced dead shortly later at a hospital, the affidavit states.

An autopsy found the girl died from asphyxia caused by smothering, police wrote.

Court documents identify the girl by her initials, A.S. An obituary indicates her name is Arianna Stout.

Yadon and the girl's infant brother were the only other people in the home at the time of the incident, according to the affidavit.

When police arrested Yadon, they reported that during an interview she "admitted to smothering A.S. using a blanket on A.S.'s bed," police wrote, adding that Yadon demonstrated her actions to them using a child-size CPR mannequin.

"Mckenley stated she had been planning and thinking about doing this act for two or three days prior to March 14," the affidavit states.

Yadon allegedly told police she smothered the girl for 4-5 minutes, according to the affidavit, and only stopped when the child stopped struggling.

"Mckenley advised she waited 10 to 15 minutes after A.S.'s death to contact a friend who she provided an inaccurate account of events, thus resulting in the initial 911 call," police wrote.

Family members have recalled the toddler as a fearless and kind child who loved animals and playing outdoors.

Christina Cook, Stout’s grandmother, said Stout was close to her older sister Naomi, who is autistic, according to the Deseret News .

“She did everything for her older sister. She made sure Naomi was taken care of. She made sure she washed her sister’s hair all the time in the tub, and she was just taking care of her big sister. And she was just that way,” Cook said.

The toddler also loved riding on four wheelers with her father and uncle and having tea parties, according to her obituary.

The biological mother is deceased

A Utah judge ordered Mckenley Yadon to serve at least 25 years and up to life in the Utah State Prison for smothering her 3-year-old stepdaughter in 2019.

Both sides had agreed to a recommended sentence of life without parole, but 8th District Judge Edwin Peterson said he wanted to allow investigators to determine in 25 years whether Yadon still poses a risk to anyone — especially children — or if she could safely be released.

“It’s one of the most reprehensible and and despicable crimes known to mankind,” Peterson said. However, he added, “I think we’re dealing with a condition of sickness here in the way somebody would think like that.”

Yadon declined to speak before she was sentenced, saying, “No, your honor,” in a voice thick with emotion.

Defense attorney Rudy Bautista told the Deseret News after the hearing that his client has several mental illnesses and developmental delays. He said Yadon’s biological parents essentially abandoned her as a child and she long endured physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

Bautista said the judge’s decision to grant Yadon the chance to leave prison in 2045 was compassionate and a recognition that the medical world could someday help Yadon and others like her.
