Authorities said that an infant and toddler were alone for days, next to their parents' bodies after an apparent murder-suicide in Chatsworth.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a father killed his wife before taking his own life. Inside the home was the couple’s 3-month-old son and 4-year-old daughter who were alone for "several days," next to the bodies of their parents. The couple's bodies were discovered on Sunday afternoon when officers responded to the home after receiving a radio call reporting an "assault with a deadly weapon shots fired," police said.

Inside the residence, officers discovered the bodies inside the upstairs bedroom. Detectives determined that the couple was married and that the husband shot his wife as she lay in bed. He then shot himself, police said.

The couple's two young children were not physically injured and were admitted into a local area hospital for observation. The children are now in the custody of the Department of Children's Family Services.

Both are in the hospital being treated for dehydration. I’m told the 4 year old fed her baby brother. Tragic story. https://t.co/xJMk37462K

Grateful that the children were spared and that they were rescued.

I'm confused by the fact the children were "alone for several days" and yet the police were responding to a call for assault and shots fired...which would suggest it occurred the same day the children were found OR were they responding to a different call and happened upon this residence?

New details were revealed Tuesday about a heartbreaking murder-suicide in Chatsworth, where two children were also found.

Police gave an update on the children, a 3-year-old girl and a 2-month-old boy. Both are in the care of the Department of Children and Family Services, and they are said to be thriving.

Investigators didn't reveal much about what happened when they found the children but said the sister was a hero in the ordeal.

"Our little angel was able to keep herself and her brother alive," said LAPD Capt. Maureen Ryan. "The baby is a miracle baby and the little girl is a hero. She's an absolute hero."

Police haven't said exactly how long the children may have been on their own before they were found.
