Dozens of law enforcement personnel were searching Friday for a 15-year-old boy who was in the middle of a murder trial in the killing of his mother when he escaped a Southern California jail.
Ike Souzer escaped the Orange County Juvenile Hall and jumped a perimeter fence just after midnight, said sheriff's Capt. Mike Peters.
The 6-foot-tall, 200-pound teen was wearing red pants and a white shirt and may have an injured leg, Peters said, adding that surveillance footage showed Souzer tending to an apparent wound after his escape.
Peters said about 60 law enforcement officials were searching for Souzer. He said there's no evidence that Souzer was armed but urged the public to call 911 if they think they've spotted him.
Souzer has been in custody since he was 13, when he was arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing his mother, 48-year-old Barbra Scheuer-Souzer. His escape came in the middle of Souzer's trial, said Kimberly Edds, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office.
Steve Sentman, chief probation officer for the county, declined to release too many details about the escape, citing security reasons, but said that Souzer somehow got out of a locked room before he was able to scale the jail's perimeter fence.
He said it's the first escape from the 434-bed facility in at least two decades and that an investigation is under way into how it happened.
A Gofundme page for Scheuer-Souzer says she was so good at helping her son with autism that she went back to school to help others with the condition. It says she was about to graduate from the University of California, Los Angeles.

15-year-old murder suspect found after escaping from juvenile

ORANGE, California -- A 15-year-old suspect accused of stabbing his mother to death two years ago has been found after he escaped from Orange County Juvenile Hall early Friday morning, authorities said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department tweeted shortly after 9:30 p.m. that Ike Souzer is back in custody after being found at a McDonald's in Anaheim.

Souzer, who had been in custody since 2017, escaped shortly after midnight from the facility, according sheriff's officials. The facility is managed by the county probation department.

Investigators said the suspect managed to get out of a locked housing unit and make his way off of a roof and over an exterior barbed-wire fence. Surveillance footage showed him tending to his leg after scaling the fence, officials said.

"It was in a locked room and then he got outside of that room and made his way outside of our facility by climbing over a fence," Chief Probation Officer Steve Sentman said.

Souzer was discovered missing after a routine head-count. He was described as white, about 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds and wearing a white shirt and red pants, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said. He may have a laceration on his left leg.

The suspect's grandmother spoke to Eyewitness News in an interview at the time and said Souzer struggles with autism.

Ty Swanson told Eyewitness News he was locked up in the same unit with the escaped teen last year.

"Someone would have to open the door for him, and he would also have to have a key to get up to the roof because the stairs -- in the unit I was in with him, I don't know if he was in a new unit -- but there had to be a key to open it and exit it," he said.

Swanson, not surprised to hear who escaped, said Souzer often spoke of starting a riot to make his getaway.

"He was trying to have people group up on the staff and jump on the staff and get the doors open because they're mainly locked by a computer," Swanson added.

While behind locked doors with the escaped juvenile, Swanson noticed Souzer's emotional battles.

"He was just a troublemaker, I guess," he said. "He had been on suicide watch before."

Officials warn that anyone who helped Souzer can be accused of harboring a fugitive and face extensive legal consequences.

I know someone who’s convinced her kid’s on the spectrum but he’s been evaluated twice and both times it’s been ruled out. He does have some mental health challenges but I worry she’s not holding him accountable for his behavior.

On the bright side, he may show up on DD some day
