A Farmington man is now charged for murdering his son.

According to the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, Fernando Azofeifa had been arguing with the child's mother Saturday and even pointed a rifle at a man who was with her when they met to exchange the 5-year-old.

A warrant was issued for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deputies immediately began searching for Fernando.

They say he later sent a text message to the mother around 1 p.m. Sunday, saying she would never see her son again.

While searching the apartment, detectives found the boy's body. They have not said how they believed he died. Azofeifa was arrested at his apartment.

Fernando was taken to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office for an interview, where he confessed to the murder of his child.

A San Juan County Sheriff's Office detective testified today that a Farmington man accused of murder said he killed his five-year-old son by smothering him with a pillow.

The sometimes graphic testimony detailing events before and after the child's death came a during a nearly three-hour-long hearing in Aztec District Court.

Fernando Azofeifa, 45, is charged with an open count of first-degree murder and aggravated assault in two separate cases, according to court records.

He is accused of pointing a rifle at his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend during a custody exchange Saturday afternoon, and of killing his son Sunday morning in a Farmington apartment, according to court documents.

Detective Mike Rietz testified that Azofeifa told him he killed his son around 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Rietz was one of the detectives who interviewed Azofeifa after he was arrested.

Rietz added Azofeifa confessed to smothering the child with a pillow while the child was on the bed in a bedroom. The child's body was found in a bathtub.

Evidence submitted during the hearing stated an official cause of death is still pending.

The father wanted full custody of his son, but the mother said no, according to Rietz.

Testimony from witnesses detailed how Azofeifa failed to bring the child back to the mother's residence Sunday morning and how she received a few phone calls and text messages from Azofeifa.

The mother testified one of the text messages from Azofeifa stated she would never see her son alive again.

She believed Azofeifa was jealous of her current relationship with her boyfriend, and that the boyfriend being friendly with the child.

Azofeifa pointed a firearm at the boyfriend Saturday afternoon when Azofeifa was at a Kirtland residence to pick up the child, according to the boyfriend's testimony.

The arrest warrant affidavit states Azofeifa got "verbally aggressive" toward the boyfriend before getting his firearm.

Azofeifa then left the scene at a high rate of speed, according to court documents.

I guess alone time with the dick was more important than calling the cops about this lunatic.

Fernando Azofeifa, 46, convicted of murdering his five-year-old son was sentenced to 22 years in prison in what a San Juan County Sheriff's Office lieutenant described as the most heinous crime he's ever witnessed.

Azofeifa was convicted of killing his five-year-old son Azarius LaMotte by smothering him with a pillow. He was also convicted of pointing a firearm at a man.

The defendant entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder and no contest plea to the aggravated assault charge during a hearing on the morning of Oct. 6 in front of Chief District Court Judge Karen Townsend in Aztec District Court.

The murder charge was reduced as part of a plea agreement signed by the prosecution and Azofeifa. A conviction for first-degree murder carries a basic sentence of life in prison.

Azofeifa was sentenced to 20 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections on the second-degree murder conviction and two years on the aggravated assault charges.
"This was a difficult case to make a plea offer on," San Juan County Chief Deputy District Attorney Dustin O'Brien told The Daily Times. "We discussed it with the mother of the victim on multiple occasions and her wishes were that we make the offer we did."
Samantha LaMotte, Azarius' mother, was the only family member to speak during the sentencing.

She said she agreed with the plea agreement and also read a letter to Azofeifa from her family, stating they still loved him and forgave him.

Samantha stated Jesus will love him and that the family hopes "the Lord" forgives Azofeifa for what he did.
