This tragedy is brought by the letter "K"...Know the warning signs and by @Knox

On the day a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Sydney Aiello escaped with her life. However, the grief of losing 17 of her classmates and teachers, as well as the long-lasting effects of enduring such a traumatic event, weighed heavily on her. And this weekend, at the age of 19, Aiello took her own life.

Now, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas community is mourning yet another loss.

Sydney's mother, Cara Aiello, told CBS Miami that her daughter struggled with survivor's guilt and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in the year following the tragedy. And while she reportedly never asked for help, she struggled to attend college classes because she was scared of being in a classroom.
Sydney was also a close friend of Meadow Pollack, one of the students who was shot and killed in the Parkland shooting. Meadow's father, Andrew, became one of the most visible of the Parkland victims' parents when he delivered a searing and emotional speech at the White House just a few days after the shooting, arguing for an increase in school safety rather than changes to America's gun laws.

CBS News journalists embedded with Andrew Pollack as part of the documentary "39 Days", which showcased the birth of a movement as many Parkland students turned their grief into action.

While the nation's attention turned to budding young activists like David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez, however, other Parkland survivors were suffering in silence. And the Aiello family's tragedy is an all too painful reminder that trauma effects teens deeply, often quietly, and for years.

We need a crying emoji for threads like this. That poor girl. Suffering from PTSD and guilt and missing her best friend. They should have had her in therapy. I'm not dissing the parents, I'm sure they were suffering too, but come on. I feel awful about this.

After surviving such a horrible ordeal such as a school shooting and living with the images of what happened I don't think it'd be possible to have any fraction of normalcy after a trauma like that. I feel horrible for this young girl who had her whole life ahead of her and it was short lived because of this. She may of survived the shooting but she was haunted for what happened that day and I imagine it stayed with her. Rest in peace Sydney Aiello.

Well, you’d think that if America wants to keep the, uh, ‘questionable’ gun laws, at the very minimum there would be some sort of publicly-funded mental health initiative for survivors of mass shootings. Oh well. Not sure what to make of this - it’s just sadness all around.

I quite agree with you. And one of these days, I'll have enough money that I won't live here anymore and the whole damn piece of dirt can go to hell.

I read in another article that she wasnt even in the same building where the shootings occurred.

She didnt SURVIVE shit. She was never in any god damn danger.

Bullshit stupid fuck articles.

Sorry not sorry for her. FFS she had access to mental health professionals across the gamut just for the asking because of her history yet she chose the cowards way out because she 'couldn't handle it'.

Yes she went through a lot, but that doesn't excuse her action because the help is out there.

And even worse the article dragging a family tragedy into the political arena to suit the various agendas out there.

Honestly, that's fucking low IMHO.

Exactly.

It's sickening how the media is playing this, lumping in it as yet another tragedy directly resulting from the school massacre. Thjis girl clearly had some serious issues regardless of what she went through and no doubt woulda struggled with mental health no matter what. A normal, healthy person doesnt go this route simply cuz they happened to attend the same school a shooting occured at.

Ok. I'm going to say a few things...

First off.
Fuck everyone who says that she didn't survive anything.

Sydney Aiello WAS at the school that day. She was not in the building where the shooting occurred.
Here's your link:

That could mean she was in gym class on the field, or in an outer classroom. who knows? That is irrelevant.

She was a child. A high school student at school, on what should have been a normal day. On what should have been an ordinary day, she went to school and lost 17 of her friends/ classmates/ teachers. While she may not have been in THAT building, it is guaranteed that she was involved in the aftermath. Looking for her friends, losing her best friend and living the horror and frenzy of a whole community hurting.

Unless you have lived it, you have no idea the emotional toll of the aftermath. It is surreal. It's like a bad dream that you can't wake up from. Everywhere you turn, people are hurting, it's all everyone is talking about and trying to work through. When everyone you know and love is hurting, you try to help them too. Sometimes, silencing your own hurt...

Both articles state that she was recently diagnosed with PTSD, obviously she had to have seen someone diagnose her. Just cuz she wasn't reaching out to family and friends does not mean she wasn't seeking help. My family and most of my friends did NOT know how bad I was hurting. They also did not know when I first started therapy. It took time for me to tell them.

During a lot of my struggles, I kept it inside. Didn't talk about it or open up at all. It took me years of therapy to start opening up about it.

Working through PTSD and survivors guilt is not easy. To be honest, I'm not sure it ever goes away.

Some of you should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves.
She was absolutely a victim too. Even if she's a victim of herself, as a direct result of the tragedy she survived. Yes, the tragedy she survived.
It's fucking heartbreaking that she took her own life cuz she hurt so bad. I pray she is at peace now.

You mean actually spend money on *leans in conspiratorially* the poors? Madness! Folly! Not with MY tax dollars, buddy. You can keep your socialwhatitsism medicine and heathen communist ways, because America isnt for sale and I don't appr-*dies of easily treated disease*

Sydney Aiello WAS at the school that day. She was not in the building where the shooting occurred.

Right, which is exactly what has been stated already.

So she didnt survive the shooting. She was not in the proximity of the shooting. Her life was never threatened by the shooting.

This is akin to a car accident happening 50 yards behind me and me going, "holy shit i just survived a car accident!"

Or my neighbors house catching fire and then me going, "oh shit i have PTSD from surviving a house fire!!!!"

During a lot of my struggles, I kept it inside. Didn't talk about it or open up at all. It took me years of therapy to start opening up about it.

You should return to this when it comes to this website and maybe keep more of your bullshit junk comments inside, dont talk about em or open up about em at all.

I pray she is at peace now.

If the black void of nothingnesss = peace, then i'd say she is.

There's been another suicide. Might warrant its own thread when more info is available.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School community is mourning a second loss as another student has taken their life, the second in over two weeks.
The report by the Miami Herald was confirmed by Coral Springs police Sunday.
Police have yet to release the age or gender of the student and are still investigating.

My personal opinion about school shootings is that when one happens it should be pushed under the rug and forgotten about. Not because I think those who die in tragic accidents deserve to be forgotten, but because it would go a long way to stopping future shootings.

The media blows up when one happens. Its not just local news anymore thanks to the internet, its world wide news. How many of the shooters openly say they do it for the attention? Most. A good chunk of them bring up Columbine or other well known shootings and basically say thats what they aspired to. Each one almost trying to out do the next with the amount of victims or how it goes down. Stop giving crazy people a platform to perform on. A person whos determined to commit a crime like this will regardless of how strict gun laws are.

Gun laws wont save anyone from this phenomenon and ultimately the grieving families are used for political agendas, that they might not even support, instead of being left to grieve and attempt to move on with their lives. How does a student involved in this ever attempt to heal when they are forever known as a survivor of such and such? When your picture and name have been plastered out there for the whole world to see? How do you move on and get a job? In todays work force background checks almost always include anything to be found online. This isnt 20 years ago were after a while people forgot and moved on. This is the day and age of everything you've ever done having a permanent spot in our little digital history. A day and age were when one incident happens, they bring up any other past one they can. A day and age were people are more concerned if they have a front row seat to the circus than they are about others being hurt or in need of help.

Yes it's a shame she couldn't deal with her demons. But ...in the end her well being and mental health was on herself to take care of and by writing an article that implies what it does, it detracts from that fact. People go through horrific things all the time. Some one committing suicide because they couldnt cope shouldn't be news worthy. The media wants views, nothing more. None of the articles about her(or the 2nd kid) focus on the fact that mental health care in America is almost nonexistent. There is no agenda to push for any of that. Instead they choose to refocus the gun debate and push more political views. There's a very real chance by making such a spectical of her death it drove someone else to theirs. No ones death should come down to being an unwitting political pawn.

"Suicide Contagion" is a real thing and has been observed for centuries. I wouldn't be surprised if another knucklehead from that school also offs themselves.

Fun Fact: Physicians now have the highest rate of suicides of any profession.

When I was an EMT/FF, EMS workers had the highest rate of suicide; sadly, it's the barbarity of human inflicted on human damage that medical hospital and field workers see several times a week, if not on a daily basis in some places, and the lose of those patients that can cause so much depression and personal despair.
Although mental/emotional therapy is often available to hospital staff, LE, and EMS crews, many will only take the therapy if it's mandated by a particular severe incident and are often too afraid of the stigma attached to the "mental/emotional" parts of the therapy and how it may relate to their career's future successes, stagnation, or even job loss.

From several of the articles I've read, the students have had problems getting help/financial assistance for counseling with the trauma they've experienced.
And for those who seem to think that being in a different location at the school from where the shootings took place prohibits a teenager from suffering severe emotional trauma and/or PTSD from the event, I'm calling bullshit on that line right now.
These are teens, who should feel safe at school, and just because you didn't see your best friend and 16 others gunned down in the next building over on campus while you were in a different building or area of the campus, does not mean you can't be severely impacted and traumatized by the entire incident - especially when you have to continue to return to the scene for 5 days a week for another year or more.

I totally disagree with you on this for various very valid reason reasons and experience as well as trying to work with other survivors of violent crimes especially in circumstances where they come from left field unlike military which are bad enough. These are kids that are totally sheltered compared to most hit with something horrific then demonized and trolled as well as threatened by adults plus feel alot of therapists unless they really knew they are taking/doing aren't with the powder to blow them into the next state. Being coddled and patronized is the usual action and it doesn't help just at best creates dependency. I am crying no becausse this is snowballing and could continue, these kids are in a situation where they are rutterless and this needs to be be stopped cold now, anther just killed himself

Holy fuck, not only did I call it, but I called it twice.

"Suicide Contagion" is a real thing and has been observed for centuries. I wouldn't be surprised if another knucklehead from that school also offs themselves.

Fun Fact: Physicians now have the highest rate of suicides of any profession.
Dr. Jeremy Richmen, a neuropharmacologist and a parent of a Sandy Hook shooting victim, committed suicide today.

edit: granted, it was a different school, but with the media being the way it is, I would be surprised if the suicides in Florida didn't pushed him over the edge.
