The parents of a 5-week-old baby have been arrested in connection with the girl’s death earlier this year in Menifee, police said Wednesday.

Gregory Brandt and Jasmine Rugga brought their daughter from the family’s home to a local hospital on Jan. 26, the Menifee Police Department stated in a news release.

Despite the medical staff’s efforts to resuscitate the girl, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Evidence led authorities to believe foul play may have been involved in the child’s death and an investigation began, the news release stated.

Brandt, 33, was arrested on suspicion of homicide on March 11. Rugga, 27, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment the same day.

No further details about the evidence or the injuries to the child were released.

He looks like the type to loose his shit over anything especially little shit.. she’s cowardly.. she had one job protect that baby.. one job.. many bruises and broken bone later and almost died I loaded my kids up while he was stranded at work purposely and we left with the clothes we had on.. I even gave the car back once I got home to my parents and never looked back.. there’s ALWAYS a way out.. it’s not pretty.. it’s hard.. you loose everything.. go into hiding.. live with a gun attached 24/7 sleepless nights .. but you and your children live.. they are beautiful grown women.. it was worth EVERY THING

Gregory Miles Brandt, 34, pleaded guilty to willful child cruelty in the death of Kailani Alexandra Brandt. In exchange for his admission, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office dropped a murder charge against him.

Brandt’s girlfriend, 28-year-old Jasmine Jenae Rugga, also admitted a child abuse charge, and the couple’s friend, Matthew Wade Ryan, admitted a misdemeanor allegation of conspiring to destroy evidence.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Jorge Hernandez certified the terms of each plea agreement and imposed the stipulated sentences, which for Rugga, was four months in county jail and three years probation, and for Ryan was 150 days in a sheriff’s work release program and three years probation.

According to Sgt. Wally Clear, on Jan. 26, 2019, Brandt and Rugga brought their daughter into the emergency room of a Temecula-area hospital because the child had stopped breathing. Despite efforts by a trauma team, the baby could not be revived and was pronounced dead a short time later, Clear said.

He said that hospital staff immediately became suspicious that the infant had suffered injuries consistent with abuse, and deputies were notified.
