Destrehan, LA — A man died at his own Wrestlemania party Sunday night after his teen cousin placed him in a choke hold. According to reports, 24-year-old Stephen Arceneaux III had invited friends to his home Sunday night to watch a gay wrestling soap opera called*Wrestlemania 28. *At some point during the festivities, Arceneaux and his 14-year-old cousin began wrestling on an inflated mattress. During the bout, the teenager, who weighed 110 pounds, got 220-pound Arceneaux in a rear-naked choke hold. For those of you unaware, this popular move is when you get behind an opponent and wrap yourself around them like an addiction. You then place a forearm around their neck while pushing on the back of their head with your other arm, subsequently cutting off their air supply. Witnesses told investigators that*Stephen Arceneaux had informed everyone he was no pussy and would not “tap out” or signal the teen to release the hold. He kept his word. After 30 to 40 seconds of not being able to breathe, witnesses say that Arceneaux turned blue from lack of oxygen. They told the teen to let go, which he did, but it didn’t matter much as Arceneaux had stopped breathing altogether. 911 was called while Arceneaux’s girlfriend unsuccessfully tried to revive him with CPR. Arceneaux would be rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The investigation is continuing, but so far no charges have been filed. “It’s bizarre,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes. “We’re still investigating it. But when you have violent horseplay like that, it just goes to show you that anything can happen.” Personally, I think I’d rather be dead than have to face my girlfriend, and my friend’s never-ending ridicule, after submitting to a 100-pound 14-year-old — who will probably never get over this.

14yo Puts "Rear Naked Choke" On 28yo Cousin, Ends Everyone's Wrestlemania Dreams

A 24-year-old Destrehan man died Sunday night when, authorities say, he stopped breathing while wrestling with a young cousin on the floor. Stephen A. Arceneaux III, who lived at 9614 Red Church Lane in Destrehan, was pronounced dead at St. Charles Parish Hospital at 10:39 p.m. An autopsy was being performed in New Orleans on Monday.

According to St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, Arceneaux had gathered with friends at a home on Murray Hill Drive to watch the pay-per-view event "Wrestlemania 28" on television when he and a 14-year-old cousin began to wrestle on an inflated mattress on the floor. The juvenile, who is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 110 pounds, placed his arm around the neck of Arceneaux, who was 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighed 220 pounds, in a move commonly known as a "rear naked choke hold" for 30 to 40 seconds.

Witnesses reported that Arceneaux said he would not give up or "tap out."

But at some point, someone noticed that Arceneaux was turning blue and told the youngster to release the hold. When he did, witnesses realized that Arceneaux had stopped breathing and dialed 911, shortly after 10 p.m.

Preliminary autopsy reports indicate that a Destrehan man who died while wrestling with his young cousin on Sunday asphyxiated, according to St. Charles Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes.

Complete autopsy results are still pending and the investigation is continuing, Yoes said. No arrests have been made, he said.

I have a cousin that when I babysat him and his baby sister he would go into what I described as a trance and would go and do the wrestling moves he just saw on his sister. Damn it, every single time I baby sat him he would do those choke holds on his little sis. It was the funniest shit ever but tiresome after a while. Thank God no one ever died or passed out.

All the men in my family are big 'rasslin' fans, my dad, stepdad, brothers, and half brother, and at least half of them thought it was FOR REAL! All the boys rolled on the floor putting wrestling holds on each other and their favorite was the sleeper hold and it sounds about like this one, the rear naked choke hold, I was always afraid someone was gonna die or I was gonna kill them when they'd start hollering at the TV, yep it's the south and that's what the good ole boys do!

But I am sure this boy is horrified that he accidentally killed his cousin, I'll bet they were best of friends and were just playing, just like hundreds of other times, and just playing too rough. Poor thing, I hope his family gets him counseling, I sincerely hope he's not charged with a crime, like manslaughter, that would be an injustice.

I am no doctor, but how do you asphyxiate in 40 seconds? I held my breath for over 3 minutes once.
My understanding is the brain can start to die of hypoxia in 4-7 minutes.

I'm no doctor either but am guessing that in this case it has little to do with blocking the airways. Rather, more to do with compression of the arteries in the neck which disrupt blood/oxygen to the brain. It only takes seconds of blocking the that blood flow to cause unconsciousness. If held too long or other damage is caused so that releasing the hold preventing restoration of blood flow, the brain may be too damaged to tell the body to breathe.

Improperly used choke holds have been blamed for many deaths. Somewhere around here is a case of a guy who used one on a roommate for a few seconds that resulted in death. Police departments have been sued for deaths resulting from them. It does happen and can happen within seconds but I'm only guessing on the exact mechanics.

Wait, you're going to sue a private blog site for something said 7 years ago? For referring to Wrestlemania as "gay wrestling soap opera"? Something that is not even criminal?

To my DD family, I have a few friends who are professional wrestlers (mostly weekend guys), the first thing they say is "don't do this shit at home", its too dangerous without proper training. We may make fun of it, but the pros don't fuck around. They have thousands of hours of training before they are allowed in the ring to perform. Wrestlers have a personal database of moves and holds they are authorized to use, managers have to match up wrestlers that have similar training for an event. Its a show and these guys (and gals) are athletes/gymnast of high caliber, but like performers in a circus there is danger in their art, as this kid discovered 7 fucking years ago.

Sorry for your loss, but simmer down - no one said anything bad about your son, lots of people thing wrestling is gay, some think Nascar is - to each their own... And if not for your comment no one new would have seen this post, it was lost in the abyss hundreds of pages back! Thanks for bringing it back from the dead! (No pun intended) n ahhh that Karma lady, I hear she's a hell of a gal! Can't wait to meet her!

Just take it down a notch.

We all know you aren't going to sue anyone, because you have no grounds to. A lot of us here have suffered all kinds of horrible trauma. Many of us use dark humor to deal with our own shit. We are actually a pretty nice bunch once you get to know us. We all feel sympathy for a mother who lost her son in what seems to be a tragic accident, don't take a stupid joke as an insult against you or your son.

Hang around, you're welcome here and there are many kind people who will support you.

I didn't make any statement he was gay, in fact, no one said he was gay. My post was actually in part about you threatening to sue over non-criminal activity, but mostly about how professional wrestling takes years of training and dedication. That it should only be done by those who can safely do it and should never be done by amateurs.

I'm not going to tell you how long to grieve, but you should do yourself a favor and not search the internet if you are still in mourning.

On a lot of days, the thought of my mother mourning for me is the only thing that keeps me alive. I know what unassailable grief is. You are not alone here, we aren't against you.

There are people on this site who wish you were right, Mrs. Arceneaux.

The members here are a cross-section of the population. We have doctors, engineers, homemakers, salesmen, veterans, active-duty servicemembers, police officers, and firefighters, among others. We have people living with various disabilities, married people, separated or divorced people, and single people here. We have straight, bi, gay, and ace people here.

We also have people who have had to bury a spouse and people who have have had to bury a child. Sadly, you are in that last group. And you have my condolences.

No, I don't know what that's like. I can't imagine that pain. But I know my own pain and I know it all too well. It ebbs and flow but it's never, ever gone. I wish that I knew some magic combination of words that would make you feel 'right' again. But those words don't exist. The only thing I really know is that you have to keep going. And I know that there are people who love you. If it gets too much, keep going for them. And when you feel truly alone, know in your heart that you truly aren't.

 Y’all are far too patient for how much stupid shit is in this thread. The only smart thing going on is defending the heterosexual honor of fucking Wrestlemania. Because if you’re watching “gay shit” for real, you’d just be an abomination.

Yea, I picked that up too, I even started to address it, but one issue at a time and one that is possible to correct in the span of a DD thread.

@Tanyaarceneaux
You re-opened an internet scab that was long forgotten by the members here and the rest of the world, except your family. And now you keep picking at it, because of a few snarky remarks from strangers in 2012.
And still, the only one who is suffering over it is you.
And the thing that really bothers you is some silly gay joke.
This is why you shouldn't search the internet for yourself or family.

Even if he were gay, that wouldn’t have mattered. Your son is still your son. Don’t let anyone tarnish that. We made a jab at professional wrestling. It had nothing to do with disrespecting your child.

I’m sorry for your loss. I’m not a mother, but I know with certainty that you will always mourn the loss of your child. You will always have the heartache. Things will get easier with time, but not because the pain lessens, but only because you grow to live with it. Like all grief, there will be times of quiet tranquility, but there will be times of unrest. It’s saudade.

I hope you can find some element of peace. It’s been seven years to us, sure, but it lives with you everyday. Don’t let random people on the internet bring you heartache.

If you sue me can we go on Judge Judy...she's my favorite. Also, can I get an itemized list of things that you will sue for? I want to be sure I have them.

Well this was a fun romp into personal sadness wallowing.
Get help and stop expecting the net to be respectful of tragedy.
It will only bum you out.
