The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reports that 11-year-old Amberly Barnett was found deceased Saturday morning.
At approximately 2 a.m. this morning, the sheriff’s office released a missing person’s report for Barnett who disappeared in the Mount Vernon area. Barnett was reported to be last seen at a family member’s residence.
At 11 a.m., Sheriff Nick Welden announced they had suspended the search and would be holding a press conference at 1 p.m.
During the first press conference, Welden said the department was originally called about Barnett’s disappearance at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. The search throughout the county and into Georgia continued through last night and into this morning, before it was suspended at 11 a.m.
At 3 p.m. Welden held a second conference to announce the body of the missing child had been located, but they were limited on the details they could release to the public.
“At approximately 6:30 a.m. this morning, the deceased body of 11-year-old Amberly Alexis Barnett was located,” Welden said. “Due to the current investigation, we are limited on the information that we are able to release.”
Welden said the department hopes to find answers for Barnett’s family soon.
“I can tell you that we are diligently, diligently pursuing different avenues, and Lord willing, we will have answers in the coming days. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward in this tragic event.”
