Police have arrested a transgender and gay rights activist for allegedly burning down his own home to make it look like a hate crime.

Nikki Joly, who organized a number of pro-LGBTQ events and initiatives is accused of intentionally setting fire to his own house in 2017.

Five pets died in the blaze and the FBI initially investigated the incident as a hate crime.

However a new police report suggests that Joly was simply looking for further publicity to advance his cause.

Joly was a celebrated figure in the local LGBTQ community for helping to build a gay community center, organizing a gay pride parade and helping to push through legislation at a local level forbidding companies from discrimination based on sexual orientation.

It's embarrassing? How do you do it to the community you have put so much effort into helping?' Travis Trombley, who is homosexual, asked The News.

According to a police report, two members of the St. John's United Church of Christ where the gay community center is located believed Joly was anxious to generate more news about LGBTQ rights.

Joly had allegedly become visibly disappointed when the 2017 Jackson Pride Parade and Festival had not generated more publicity, good or bad.

According to Metro News, investigator Aaron Grove, who interrogated Shelton and James, said the pair described Joly as 'very deceptive' and possessing 'layers of manipulation.'

Joly had just got married before the fire and the pair received $58,000 in fundraising from supporters.

He took to Facebook two days after telling supporters: 'Yes, be angry, be very angry.'

'Use that anger to force good! Use that anger to make change.'

But police were already turning their attentions to Joly after discovering he had bought $10 of gas at a local Marathon store on the morning of the fire.

Trump loves all Patriots regardless if they're gay or straight. And this guy is not a good patriot. I know the popular opinion is that Trump is Anti LGBT ... but there is too much evidence to the contrary. Like he said himself during a speech that he had no concerns with LGBT, and that they didn't need his help with their cause because its been something they have been winning at for a long time, years and that is a compliment.

It happens a lot, and so often the "hate crimes" seem to involve fire and also mention of a MAGA hat. The race ones are pretty bad too, like the dude who spray painted KKK and Vote Trump on his own church and lit it on fire. That's absolutely not how white racists even talk. I feel like a lot of these people haven't actually experienced hate crimes and are terrible at guessing how they actually go down.

None of them actually want to get injured, so they always use the same shit that conveniently leaves them unscathed. If you want to fake this shit in this day and age, you better be featuring a very broken face or people will figure it out. Spend some time with true racists and homo-haters, get a feel for how they speak and act, and maybe the stories will be more believable. Most hate crimes happen out of pure rage, and those people aren't going to take the time to watch you burn in your house and generally aren't premeditated. Haters also tend to use speech that's more creative than what the fake victims imagine, not the classic basic-bitch terms.

I read a piece about this guy. He was an activist around his local area and pushed a lot of LGBTQ issues on the city council. He got every one of this ideas approved, even a LGBTQ paraded, with no counter arguments, proposals, or even hate mail. His parade was uneventful. It was surmised that he wanted conflict, but got none. No one yelled at him, no counter protest, the local people were either supportive or uninterested. It appears he felt angry that no one attacked him or put him down, he wasn't given a chance to defend the LGBTQ against bigotry. He set fire to his home, which also burned his 2 dogs and 3 cats to death, to get sympathy for his cause.

He wanted to be a victim, but no one obliged, so he made himself one. That is the power of victim-hood nowadays.

Exactly, and the people who support them don't know either. I also wonder how many suspect a hoax, but go along anyway for their own agenda.( Like Kamala Harris over Smollett. I expected her to be smarter than to fall for that. Or did she think "He's an idiot, but I can ride this wave for a while.")
The hoaxes are nothing new, they ebb and rise with the social/political climate.

Here's our "man" in court. Moobies! There is a great timeline and history at the link. Highly recommended reading.

Everything he championed has went down smoothly and he was angry he wasn't needed anymore to lead the protests. He looks like Aunt Bea in a bad fitting suit. It's hard to believe he's only 54, he looks at least 70 and that's being kind to him. Maybe he needs to smarten up his look, might make him less angry.

During the investigation, the Jackson Police Department seized Joly’s electronic devices. An email from Joly to his defense counsel referenced where a gas can and lawnmower from Joly’s house could be found. Police then talked to the people referenced in the email and, with a search warrant, took the gas can and lawnmower into evidence.
That email was protected under attorney-client privilege and is not allowed in the court proceedings, the appeals court ruled on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Jackson County Circuit Judge John McBain should not have allowed the email into evidence, the ruling said. [...]

A former Jackson LGBTQ rights activist will spend at least one year behind bars for the arson fire that destroyed his home in 2017, a Jackson judge ruled Wednesday.

Nikki Joly, 57, was sentenced to 17 to 120 months in prison by Jackson County Circuit Judge John McBain on June 8. Joly is also ordered to pay $14,893 to the owner of the home and $61,755 to the insurance company.

Joly pleaded no contest in April to a charge of third-degree arson. He is convicted of intentionally starting an Aug. 10, 2017 fire that destroyed his home
