The officer was in full uniform just after 10 p.m. Thursday evening when she walked into an apartment unit she believed to be her own at the 1200 block of South Lamar, about a quarter-mile from the Dallas Police Department.

While inside, she pulled her firearm and shot the 26-year-old, male victim. He later died at the hospital.

The unnamed officer is now on administrative leave, and police have not yet identified the victim.

DPD says they are conducting a join investigation with the DA.

The only way I can see it being legitimately an accident is that she must've just moved in and doesn't yet know her own apartment number  and then got all paranoid when she realized her door wasn't locked the way she had left for her shift. Must've been a rough shift at that.

A private Christian university in Arkansas says the 26-year-old man who was killed by an off-duty Dallas police officer who said she confused his apartment with her own was a native of the Caribbean island country of St. Lucia who often led worship services at the school's campus.

Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, said in a statement Friday that Botham Jean was a 2016 graduate of the school. Since July 2016, he had been working in risk assurance for accounting and consulting firm PwC.

Police say that after the officer reported that she had shot Jean, she told officers who arrived at the scene that she had mistakenly entered his apartment, thinking it was hers. Jean was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police haven't released the name of the officer, who wasn't injured.

A Dallas man was killed late Thursday when a police officer returning home from her shift entered the wrong apartment in her building and eventually opened fire, authorities said.

Details surrounding the death of Botham Shem Jean, a 26-year-old native of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, were not immediately available early Friday.

His mother, Allie Jean, said in a phone interview that his family was stunned to learn of his death.

"He did no one any wrong," she said.

Dallas police in a statement said that preliminary information suggests the officer involved called for help, and told responding officers that "she entered the victim's apartment believing that it was her own."

The incident began just before 10 p.m. CT (11 p.m. ET) at the South Side Flats, an upscale apartment complex directly south of Dallas' downtown.

During the encounter, the officer was in full uniform and "fired her weapon striking the victim," police said.

Jean was taken to the hospital and died. The Dallas County Medical Examiner later released his identity.

The officer was not immediately identified, and was being placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

At a news conference early Friday, Dallas police Sgt. Warren Mitchell said they had yet to interview the officer and would not speculate as to whether she mistakenly entered another apartment and believed the man already inside was an intruder.

"We still have a lot to do in this investigation," Mitchell added.

Allie Jean said her son lived in a gated apartment complex and had no reason not to trust anyone who was at his door.

"He's that kind of person," she said.

But she questioned how the situation could have escalated to her son's shooting.

"Somebody has to be crazy not to realize that they walked into the wrong apartment," Allie Jean said. "He's a bachelor. Things are different inside."

"And if you try your key and it doesn't work, that should make you realize you're at the wrong apartment," she added. "Every door for each apartment is also numbered."

Allie Jean said she would speak with her son daily, usually before 10 p.m., but thought he might be out after she didn't hear from him.

She remembered her son, who was nicknamed Bo, as a top student who loved serving as a song leader in church and leading worship.

He attended Harding University, a private Christian institution in Arkansas, and was a member of the Good News Singers and campus ministry.

"I don't think there was a student on campus who didn't know Botham," said Landis Tindell, who knew him as a resident adviser. "He was always friendly, always smiling, and just all around a great person."

After Jean graduated in 2016, he remained in the U.S. with an internship at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, where he worked in the risk assurance department, his mother said.

"We were very, very close," Allie Jean added. "We would talk about everything, about politics. Botham loved everyone, and everyone loved him."

His sister, Allisa Charles-Findley, wrote on Facebook that she was thinking about what to get Jean for his 27th birthday later this month, but "now I have to go pick out your casket."

"My brother is my best friend," she told NBC News. "My heart is broken beyond repair."

I don't really understand how else this could happen, unless she was out of it on drugs or was drunk.

Like, okay, if she had JUST moved into the building, and she was really tired from working, I can see how MAYBE she would try to enter the wrong apartment. Back when I had a silver car, I did try to put my key in the wrong door more than once, as I mistook other silver Hyundais for my own. You zone out, it happens. If a building is new and unfamiliar, it happens. I've tried to get into the wrong hotel room before, too. All those doors look alike!

I'm assuming his door was unlocked and she strolled right in; otherwise, she would've realized she screwed up as soon as her key failed to fit in the door.

So assuming the door was open and she strolled in...why would she have not realized immediately that she was in the wrong apartment?? All apartments can look alike--same layout, same white walls, same beige carpet, but the decor differs. How did she not realize that, "Holy shit, that's not my sofa! Those aren't my pictures hanging on the wall!"?

Please keep my church family in your prayers you guys. He was a songleader at my home church Dallas West and a beloved member of the community there.
I am absolutely fucking livid about this and I never met the young man but my mother knew him and everyone is devestated.
Our church homecoming was this past weekend and my mother said his spirit was full and happy. I cant imagine how something so evil could happen in the span of a week.
Tired doesnt even begin to encompass how we all feel right now. Absolutely senseless.

I once walked off with someone else's shopping cart and started to get defensive but I took a moment and looked into the cart, realized that's not my stuff, and apologized. so.... yeah

@CbabyRKO

white Dallas police officer is facing manslaughter charges for shooting dead a black man in his home after she entered his apartment thinking it was her own.

The unnamed female officer was off duty and returning home from work Thursday night when she entered 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean's apartment.

Dallas authorities say the uniformed officer was confronted by Jean, pulled her gun on him and fired.

The officer then called dispatch to report the shooting. When authorities arrived she told them mistook Jean's apartment for her own.

Jean, who grew up on the Caribbean Island of St Lucia and worked as a PricewaterhouseCoopers associate, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A blood sample was drawn from the female officer to determine her drug and alcohol levels, Police Chief Renee Hall said in a press conference Friday afternoon.

Dallas police are now seeking a warrant for manslaughter charges against the cop.

Hall confirmed that the officer is white, but she did not say whether investigators believe race was a factor in the shooting.

She added that the officer would be identified pending any charges.

She saw a black man and lost all focus of her surroundings. Sad that her instant reaction was to shoot him

Or perhaps she also would have shot the guy if he was white. Or maybe this was a cold blooded murder, that she planned because she didn't want to live near a black guy. In the absence of evidence, assuming either would be irresponsible. But not as irresponsible as this dozy cop.

Either way, this isn't someone that should be out in the world with a gun.
Hell, she couldn't even find her own apartment nor recognize her own furniture.

I am profoundly confused why she wasnt handcuffed and arrested on the spot and immediately charged with murder.

I am profoundly confused why she was not immediately fired as she sat in jail awaiting her first hearing.

Why was she not named immediately?

This is so fucking sickening how the police are attempting to protect their own here.

Hopefully the fact that she was in uniform and no doubt used her service weapon will still enable the victims family to sue the absolute shit out of the city of Dallas and make them hurt BAD for this. THey hired someone who had no business being on the job, who clearly was a danger to everyone she encountered, they trained her to kill and gave her a weapon to do it with and set her loose on the public, and look what happened. THey need to pay.

I would not be surprised if it turned out she knew the guy, bad breakup perhaps, and so she shot him to death and then came up with this bullshit story to avoid full justice for it.

Until I read this I was assuming they might be furnished flats with about as much personality as hotel rooms, - after all, she has only just moved in a may not have had a chance to hang her own preferred pictures empty the boxes of knick-knacks yet. Bachelors have been known to leave things rather sparse, but ....

Amber Guyger Not Verified As Police Officer Who Shot Botham Shem Jean

http://thedailyhaze.com/amber-guyger-botham-shem-jean/

But they're not saying that it isn't her, correct? It seems like it would be prudent on behalf of the DPD to either issue a denial or name the officer. What's the point in delaying it? They are going to have to, at some point confirm the shooters identity.

^^^
They want to afford her as much possible time as possible to prepare for the bad PR coming her way. It's a privelege absolutely no one else who slaughters someone in cold blood for no good reason would be afforded, but cuz she's a cop, she gets special treatment of course. Vile. They are prob actively sanitizing her social media, getting with family/friends/aqcuaintences to see if there will be any damage coming from them if they start talkin to reports(prob actively prepping them what to say if media finds them). Literally covering every possible area of concern prior to this hitting public.

They better lock this wretched bitch up, whoever she is

I really hate the fact that you are probably right. Even I can be idealistic. I'd like to think that cops are held to a higher standard but the truth is that they circle wagons and they do it better than anyone.

From @giantblue link above.
. Initially, Amy Gyger was named as the officer responsible for the shooting. A picture of Jean with three women was said to have pictured Gyger. Social media has spread a rumor that Jean was dating Gyger
I'm going to shit my britches if jack is right.
Holy hell, if she was dating him then she just stone cold murdered him.

That would make sense of why LE is being hush hush. Scrambling around trying to cover their asses.

Edit
I just read updated info from the original link. Although they still have not named the officer, LE has confirmed they did not know each other.

I keep wondering how it escalated to the point where she shot him? Did she say anything? Did he? I doubt he was armed and he seems like a sweet man who was quite religious, so it seems unlikely he attacked or threatened her, so why did she shoot him?

He was in his home. I should not have thought it unreasonable that he tried to throw an intruder pretending to be a police woman out.

And at that point she still wasn't able to notice that it was HIS apartment, not hers? Also, I would imagine that being an intelligent man, he would have been cautious around a cop with a gun.

Amber Guyger, police officer named in Dallas fatal shooting, shot a suspect in 2017

Dallas police Officer Amber Guyger, whom authorities say fatally shot a black man last week in an apartment she mistook for her own, was also involved in the shooting of a suspect in 2017, according to a report.

Guyger, 30, a four-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division, was identified late Saturday by Dallas police as the white officer who fatally shot Botham Jean, 26, in the South Side Flats apartment complex in Dallas around 10 p.m. local time Thursday.

The police officer was a tenant of the building for only about a month, the Morning News reported.

Guyger faced no charges following a May 12, 2017, incident in which police say she shot and wounded Uvaldo Perez after a struggle that resulted in Perez taking Guyger's stun gun, according to an affidavit reviewed by the Morning News.

From a tweet by Steve Eager:
Dallas police tell me the just off shift officer who shot and killed a man in his own apartment, was on the WRONG FLOOR. HER apartment was on another floor. Her key didn’t work in the door. Shooting happened shortly after resident opened his own door.
