Court documents show an Osceola couple facing child endangerment charges kept two of their children locked in a room subdivided by wood and kept plastic buckets for the children to use as a toilet. Medical experts also indicate the children were malnourished.

Officials said in a news release that a joint investigation between the Osceola Police Department and the Iowa Department of Human Services that began in January resulted in the arrests of 42-year-old Kenneth Fry and 40-year-old Kelly Fry.

Court documents indicate the couple had seven children, and two of them had been adopted from Ghana, one age 8 and one age 9. The two children had been home-schooled.

Investigators said the other five children had typical and age-appropriate bedrooms, while the two adopted children shared a bedroom that had been subdivided into two rooms made of wood. The wooden rooms were lined entirely in plastic, with alarmed doors.

Investigators said the rooms were bare, containing only a plastic mat, a blanket and a small shelf on the wall. There were no other furnishings or personal items in the rooms, other than a plastic bucket for the adopted children to use as a toilet, investigators said.

Kelly Fry told investigators the couple had decided to construct those rooms for the adopted children due to their bad behavior.

She indicated both children would defecate and urinate in their room. She said the alarms were added because the children would sneak out and steal food and steal from other family members.

She also told investigators the children chose to use the buckets, over the bathroom facilities in the home.

Court documents indicate both children were removed from the home and placed with relatives in January. The two children told investigators that they were required to spend a majority of their day isolated in their bedrooms.

Though they were not locked in their rooms, they said the doors were alarmed and they would be disciplined if they did leave. The children told investigators the discipline was generally forced exercise.

The children told investigators they ate oatmeal almost exclusively for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the other children in the home had no such restrictions. One of the children told investigators she sneaked out of the room for food because she was hungry.

A physical examination of the children revealed that both children exhibited signs of being malnourished, as both had leveled off on growth charts. The 8-year-old child was under the 10th percentile for weight and under the 1 percentile for height.

She was observed to have a distended belly, which is consistent with malnutrition. She weighed 50 pounds and was 56 inches tall.

The 9-year-old child weighed 69 pounds and was 53 inches tall. He had also leveled off on the growth chart, for both height and weight. He was determined to have suffered child neglect and nutritional neglect.

Since being removed from the Fry’s residence and being placed with relatives, investigators say the children have not exhibited the behaviors Kelly Fry claimed. Three months later, both children have gained weight and are engaged in therapy and services.

Kenneth and Kelly Fry have been charged with child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor; child endangerment causing bodily injury, a class D felony; and neglect or abandonment of a dependent person, a class C felony.

"If I would see (Kelley Fry) at the store, you know, I'd stop and talk to her and it wasn't hurry, hurry,” said one neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous. “It was a conversation. Or they're out jogging, you know?"

Kelly Fry, formerly Kelly Schade, was a standout pitcher at Simpson College in the late 1990s.

Kenneth Fry is the younger brother of State Rep. Joel Fry, who turned down our request for an interview Monday.

“They're always out in the community,” the neighbor said. “He was my daughter's soccer coach. You see them all the time. I just don't believe it. They're active in the community. They're active in their kids' sports and everything."

Authorities removed the two adoptive children from the home in January.

I was reading this thinking "this better not be white people" and it IS  They about to be crucified
I want to know their motive.

Is there a gov. check each month?

Did they need to get some aggression out and couldn't possibly treat their own flesh and blood like that?

Since they were such a well kept secret, it couldn't have been for attention.

So what was their motive????

It may be the kids had mental health problems they were clueless to handle. Probably thought their perfect family could “save” these kids and were resentful when they weren’t suitably grateful. The only way some people know how to parent is by doubling down on stupid punishments— you’re grounded till you’re 30!

Is there a cash incentive to adopt a child from a 3rd world country?

So what was their motive????

Adopting black children from 'third-world' countries is instant evangelical Christian street cred. Not an American black child, that's just lame and you won't level up. Chinese or Russian kids might work, particularly if they have a disability and/or you adopt a sibling group or do repeated adoptions.

There are any number of stories exactly like this one, with different details here and there, and many more that are less horrific but that still show an appalling lack of empathy or understanding. Google "Christian adoption movement" if you dare.

How can that apply to this case when no one even knew the kids were there?
I can see it if they flaunted the kids around when there was some attention to be had and then lock them away for several days only to get them out for another show. Explain away their then malnourished bodies on them having some this or that reason they can't gain weight.
But no one even know the kids were there.

I don't like children. I think they are irritating, smelly, obnoxious etc. Call me a selfish asshole if you will, but at least I haven't brought any kids I didn't want into this world. Yet even with my dislike for people whose brains are still developing, I can't understand how anyone could treat a child in this fashion and still sleep at night. Fuck these people, I hope they bleed to death, lying on the moldy floor of a piss-reeking communal prison toilet.

Thank goodness someone noticed in time and these kids were saved. There was a similar case in my state... strict Christian family adopted kids from Africa to add to their many bio kids and home schooled them. They appear to have treated them badly from the start, singled them out for punishment, claimed they were disobedient to justify the punishment, fed them lesser and different food, refused to let them use the same bathroom as the rest of the family, and ended up killing one of them. They abused her to death and she died laying naked in the mud.

These people seem to be heartless bigots who consider these third world kids to be defective, dirty and reprehensible. Why on earth would you adopt kids you are predisposed to hate?

I did and I have no idea what your point was
I felt you made it sound like adopting parents where horrible people, that doesn’t seem to be the case:shrug:

.

It is not said, in this article or any of the others that I read, that no one knew the kids were there. It's just said that they had been kept locked up for several months (and they were adopted years ago). I would bet money that people in their church knew about the adoption when it happened.

My point was to show a possible motive for why someone would adopt the kids and then treat them this way - numerous people adopt these kids to look good and/or feel good about themselves while being completely unprepared for the reality.

I don't think adoptive parents, in general, are horrible people. I do think that the Christian adoption movement is fraught with problems and sketchy motives.

hey about to be crucified

As they should be. Nobody should be able to get away with sort of thing. Social Services should be involved when children from other countries are adopted, to at least check up on them for a while at least.

I don't like children.

I have no problem at all with you knowing what you want and can handle and taking precautions to make sure that no unwanted babies are born.

An Osceola couple accused abusing their two adopted children from Ghana have pleaded guilty in the case.

Kenny and Kelly Fry were charged with neglect or abandonment of a dependent person, child endangerment-bodily injury, and child endangerment in June 2018.

They each entered guilty pleas to two counts of child endangerment, aggravated misdemeanors, last week but amended pleas were filed Monday.

The investigation began in January of 2018 after the children went to a neighbor’s house and cried to be let inside.

Criminal complaints in the case say the Frys forced the children, who were 8 and 9 years old at the time, to go to the bathroom in buckets instead of toilets, made them sleep on plastic mats, and fed them only oatmeal for all three meals.

A physical examination done at Blank Children’s Hospital determined the children were malnourished and their growth had likely been stunted by nutritional neglect. They were removed from the home and placed with relatives.

Kelly Fry and Kenny Fry admitted to keeping their two children in plastic-lined rooms and forcing them to use buckets as toilets has avoided prison time.

In May, the couple took a plea deal, admitting to two counts of child endangerment.

On Thursday, the Frys received a deferred judgement of two years of probation, over $12,000 in fines and 100 hours of community service.

Judge Dustria Relph says the Frys are taking steps to right their wrongs and sentencing needs to focus on rehabilitation and opportunities for growth. The judge cited the couple's attendance at counseling and helping to place the two children in transitional homes.

Police say a physical exam determined the kids were malnourished and their growth had likely been stunted by neglect.

Since being removed from the custody of the Frys, the state says the two adopted children are "thriving and sometimes ask to be reunited with the defendants."

As long as Kelly Fry and Kenny Fry successfully complete their probation, the charges will be wiped from their records.

The Fry family adopted those two children from Ghana and say they were dealing with reactive attachment disorder. In an effort to discipline the children, who were reportedly defecating and urinating in their rooms and sneaking out to steal food, the boy and girl lived in rooms with alarms on the doors and plastic mats on the floor. Meanwhile, the couple's five other children had "typical and age appropriate childhood bedrooms."

That seems like an awfully light sentence considering what they did to those kids. Guess it helps to be white, evangelical Christian, and with powerful relatives in good old Iowa.

At least the kids are no longer with them, although it said the children went to live with "relatives"... whose relatives? The abusive adoptive families relatives? Their own blood relatives? One of the most telling factoids is that it says the kids did not exhibit any of the behaviors the adoptive parents accused them of in their new home.

And yet
. On Thursday, the Frys received a deferred judgement of two years of probation, over $12,000 in fines and 100 hours of community service.
And then their is this
. As long as Kelly Fry and Kenny Fry successfully complete their probation, the charges will be wiped from their records.

To quote Princess Anne: “One does not have to like children to be concerned for their welfare.”

I feel the same way about dogs.
