Still breaking news, but they arrested the older brother

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Two young children are dead following a stabbing in Colorado Springs overnight.

Police said officers responded to a call in the 900 block of Carlisle Street shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday and found three victims with apparent stab wounds. All three victims were taken to the hospital.

A 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy died from their injuries. The third victim, the children's father, suffered injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

Police said they took into custody Malik Vincent Murphy, 19. ABC affiliate KRDO reports the young victims are siblings and the suspect is the children's older brother.

Murphy faces two counts of first-degree murder.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two children are dead and a father is recovering in the hospital after a 19-year-old reportedly went on a stabbing spree in an El Paso County home early Tuesday.

Police arrested Malik Vincent Murphy on two counts of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Reports released after the teen's arrest detailed Murphy's past, along with details from the stabbing.

Murphy's father revealed information while in the hospital to police, including that he believed his son had talked about killing in the past.

Jefferson Murphy, the father of Murphy and both children who died from their injuries, suffered stab wounds to the neck area, but was able to hold his son down until police got to the bloody scene.

Documents released on Tuesday show Mr. Murphy woke up when he heard screaming in the basement of his family home, and was attacked by his son when he walked into the basement.

"Jefferson Murphy told [police] that Malik Murphy had talked about doing this previously," the documents read.

The teen eventually spoke to police while in their custody, saying he often has "homicidal ideations" and decided before stabbing the two children that he wanted to be "alone."

He told police that he purchased the knife used in the attack at a Wal-Mart months ago after deciding then to kill his family so he could live alone.

The teen revealed to police he "was going to kill his family" and "bury them in the backyard."

Murphy said his son slept in the same room with his brother and sister, which is where the attack occurred.

While talking to police, the teen said he believed he stabbed his brother and sister — identified as 5- and 7-years-old — three times each.

During the recounting of events, police said Malik told them he remembered his sister yelling his name when he stabbed her.

Family members, many of which live in Nebraska, are responding to Colorado Springs to attend to Mr. Murphy, who is said to be recovering well from his stab wounds, and Murphy's wife.

I don't know what the sleeping arrangements were in the home accept that a 19 year old shared a bedroom with a 5 and 7 year old. If the young man had threatened to harm others in the past he definitely should not have been in a room with them.

I am pretty sure there will be a history of mental illness since there were previous threats towards the siblings and family.

Murphy was also arrested in Effingham County, Illinois, in late March after setting fire to his parents' car, WXEF reported.

The car was spotted engulfed in flames on a grassy verge along the Avenue of Mid-America. It's not clear what he was doing in Illinois.

When police arrived they spotted Murphy staring at the fire; his clothes matched those of the driver described by witnesses.

The case was dismissed in August when Murphy's parents asked for him not to be charged, Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler said.

They said that he had severe mental problems, but was taking medication and had no criminal record.

Kibler said that the case was dismissed by local authorities on the condition that Murphy seek counselling, and the teen had undergone at least six sessions prior to the stabbing incident.

The parents were aware of his issues so I still question why they would allow him to stay in the room with the two younger siblings.

I can only imagine that they were trying to protect their son and keep him from going to jail orbeing homeless but what a terrible price to pay.

Using the affidavit and Zillow, their house, 912 Carlisle St, Colorado Springs, Co is a 2,054 square feet, 4 bedroom, 2 bath single family home with 4,000 square feet of yard and an attached garage of 435 square feet.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't see why young Mister Psycho Stabby couldn't have his own room to beat off in.

And drug use

That is a lot of pressure to share a room with young children like that. Not excusing him but I can see how this escalated his mental health issues.
Sorry
But I say bullshit to that ...
Its a attitude that's mental plus drugs
Plus the self deserveing bullshit
A 2'500 ft house bullshit

The teen accused of murdering his little brother and sister kept his eyes off his family Friday as he made his first physical appearance before a judge.

The family of Malik Murphy, having endured a nightmarish ordeal for almost two weeks, were visibly shellshocked and several crying as they sat in the courtroom for Murphy's first appearance.

Murphy, 19, sat quietly and wouldn't look at them.

He is accused of stabbing his siblings so brutally that they only survived long enough to reach the hospital.

Noah and Sophia, who were laid to rest earlier this week, were just 7 and 5 years old.

The attack happened in early morning hours of Oct. 17 as the family slept. Murphy reportedly went after his siblings first, and it was his sister's screams that alerted the rest of the household and likely saved lives, his uncle said.

Murphy's father went to see what the commotion was and was met by his son with a knife, according to the arrest papers. Despite his injuries, the father was able to hold his son until help arrived, the papers say. He was the sole survivor of the attack.

Murphy allegedly later claimed his intent was to kill his entire family and bury them in the backyard.

Something is off about this story ..

For the first time, 11 News is hearing a first-hand account from a teen accused of killing his brother and sister. Malik Murphy was back in the courtroom Friday where a video was played of his interview with detectives from the morning of the murders. In it, Murphy admits to stabbing his siblings and father and says it was something he "had to do."

In court, about 45 minutes of a roughly 2 and a half hour recording was played of Murphy's interaction with detectives on the morning of the murders.

In the video the lead detective questions Murphy about having thoughts in his head about the killings. Murphy says he has been struggling with homicidal thoughts for months.

According to arrest papers obtained by 11 News, Malik Murphy's father Vinnie told police he was sleeping in his bedroom when he woke up to screaming in the basement. When he went to check it out, his son allegedly began stabbing him with a knife.

The attack happened in early morning hours of Oct. 17 as the family slept. Murphy reportedly went after his siblings first, and it was his sister's screams that alerted the rest of the household and likely saved lives, his uncle said.

"Malik met me at the top of the stairs as I was going to turn the corner to go down the stairs," recalled Vinnie Murphy. "I was face to face with him for a split second, then I see the knife raised and come down into my neck."

At this point, no one knew that Malik had already attacked his little brother and sister. Melissa woke up to find her husband and son fighting in the garage. With a knife sticking out of his neck, Vinnie was punching Malik and holding him down.

"It was such confusion. It's 1 a.m. and Vinnie's still yelling, 'He stabbed me!' And Vinnie is reaching around me and he is still punching Malik," Melissa remembered.

One of their other sons, 14-year-old Elijah, called 911. In such a state of shock, Sophia's grandma didn't even realize at first what happened to the kids. And then it became all too clear.

"I heard her [the grandma] yell, 'Sohpia's been stabbed!' So I run and I don't know Sophia's upstairs, I don't know she's up there, so I go running upstairs to the room and I find my Noah and he's at the bottom," Melissa wept as she replayed that night out loud. "He was out of bed, he was on the floor, like he was almost to the stairs, and there was so much blood. I knew he was gone. So I left him. I hated leaving him but I had to find Sophia. So I ran up the stairs and found her outside my door."

In an interview, Murphy told the detective he often had "homicidal ideations." He said he wanted to live alone at the home and he purchased a knife several months ago with the plan to kill his family. Murphy told the detective his plan was to kill his entire family and bury them in the backyard.

Part of the evidence in this case includes mental health records that detail years of intensive therapy, mental hospital visits, and a trial of medications. The parents say Malik Murphy admitted that he had killed animals and that he had thoughts of killing his family. Malik even went as far as calling police on himself last summer.

Malik Murphys attorney focused most of his questions in court on his client's mental health. He asked about a specific part in the interview video where Murphy is left alone and starts talking to himself, repeating words like "I'm sorry," and "Please stop." He is also seen banging his head against the wall.

Wow. So sad.

Also, one article said the kids were killed in their bedroom and others say the killings took place in the basement. Were the three of them sharing the basement as a bedroom in a four bedroom home, seriously?!? Or am I the only one who is thinking that is what it's saying?

Which implies a whole bunch of children, which in turn might explain the bedroom issue.
Also a grandmother in the house
Still doesn't explain why the nineteen year old didn't just move the fuck out, though.
Because he is insane.
The killer wasn't likely to move out on his own. Parents could have evicted him out but probably wanted him close so they could help him stay on meds and treatments.
After burning the car and talking about homicidal thoughts, they needed to stand 24 hour guard in their own home.

Not sure why a family wouldnt send a monster like this away. Sure they had him talking to people and getting "treatment", but when he is straight up saying, "i want to slaughter everyone" and butchering animals, you dont just send him to counseling. This monster shoulda been put in a boot camp or something or caged.

Hopefully he spends the rest of his life in a cage. Courts will prob have mercy due to him struggling with sociopathy for so long and being of a young age. Sad. Very sad he wont be put to the sword immediately. He deserves to be isolated from society forever.

Tragic how badly these parents FAILED and willfully created a deadly situation that cost their children their lives. They should be charged with negligence. Worse then putting a loaded gun in the young childrens rooms to play with.

Not sure why a family wouldnt send a monster like this away.

Sending him to boot camp or a special school cost money, quite a lot of money. It is very possible they didn't have it. Mental health coverage in the US is usually pretty minimal, and even if you have coverage, there are very few beds or spaces available. It is a real dilemma for parents of a kid like this. They could kick him out onto the street, or try to keep helping him at home. In this case, their choice had tragic consequences, but It is hard to fault them for not kicking their clearly unable to care for himself son out into the street.

When it comes to protecting my family from certain death, i would find the money.

And of course kicking him out should have been an EASY go to decision.

but It is hard to fault them for not kicking their clearly unable to care for himself son out into the street.

No it's not. He had every chance in the world to get his shit together and it appears he refused, fuck him. No idea why parents go out of their way to be held hostage by shitbird trash offspring and other relatives.

If the kid is just as asshole, I agree. If the kid is actually seriously mentally ill then it is far less of a choice on his part to "get his shit together".

The man at the center of a family nightmare says he is innocent of any wrongdoing.

Malik Murphy, charged with killing his two young siblings in a stabbing spree one year ago this Wednesday, pleaded not guilty to the crimes on Monday. According to reporter Lance Benzel with 11 News partner The Gazette, Murphy is citing insanity.

Two state psychologists evaluated Murphy and said he is competent to stand trial, according to The Gazette. He is scheduled to be back in court on Nov. 5.

The parents of Murphy released the following statement to the public on Monday:

"Today was doubly hard, coming almost a year to the day since this terrible crime. We are still heartbroken, but we are steadfast in refusing to run away from God and give in to fear and hopelessness.

Every court date is gut-wrenching for us as parents trying to love our children and each other the best we can while grappling with these terrible circumstances. But as the case advances through the legal system, we reaffirm our trust in the Lord to bring justice for Sophia and Noah and healing and deliverance for Malik -- maybe even a relationship with him ourselves in the future.

A Colorado Springs man was sane when he allegedly stabbed and killed his two siblings, according to state psychiatrists.

The defense for Malik Murphy is requesting 60 days to find a different doctor after the announcement in court on Monday. The prosecution is concerned about how a second evaluation would impact a speedy trial. The judge granted a second evaluation.

Murphy, charged with killing his two young siblings in a stabbing spree on Oct. 17, 2017, pleaded not guilty to the crimes citing insanity.

Another hearing is scheduled for May 20.

The case was dismissed in August when Murphy's parents asked for him not to be charged, Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler said.
Too bad the parents didn't have him arrested.

Malik Murphy will spend the next 96 years in prison in the grisly stabbing deaths of his 5- and 7-year-old siblings.

Noah and Sophia Murphy were attacked as they slept in October of 2017; their father was also injured as he rushed to try to help the children.

Murphy, who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the killings earlier this year struck a plea deal, admitting guilt to two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree murder, according to the El Paso County District Attorney's Office. He was immediately sentenced to 48 years for each murder count and to 16 years for the attempted murder.

Murphy's mother, who was present in the courtroom Friday, addressed the court in tears saying, "Each day we're hit with a horrible reality of what happened..." "Now, we've lost 3 children....you stole their lives - they were only 5 and 7 years old."
