At least three people were injured after a shooting Friday at a middle school in Noblesville, Indiana, officials said.

A suspect was in custody after what Indiana State Police earlier had called an active shooter incident at Noblesville West Middle School.

Noblesville police Chief Kevin Jowitt told reporters that a teacher and a student were taken to hospitals with injuries. But hospital officials said at least three people, including one adult, were being treated. One student had an ankle fracture.

Jowitt said the shooting was reported shortly after 9 a.m. He said the situation was contained and that a male student was in custody.

Jowitt said a secondary threat was received at Noblesville High School.

"We have multiple officers and a command post established at Noblesville High School and are diligently ensuring the safety of students and staff there," he said. "We have not received any information that this has been anything other than a communicated threat."

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb, who was returning to Indianapolis from a trip to Europe, said in a statement that he was monitoring the situation and that about 100 Indiana State Police officers were made available to work with local authorities.

Dan Spehler shared a firsthand account from a seventh grader who was in the Noblesville West Middle School classroom at the time of the shooting.

“I literally just spoke with a seventh grader who was in the room where this happened. Her mom came to pick her up this morning. She confirmed what I heard from another person who lives nearby that this was in a science classroom and that a science teacher may have been the one to literally tackle this kid and swat the gun away from him.

That is a firsthand account… She described him as a student, and that he shot at someone in the room, and one student was injured. And that this science teacher bravely swatted that gun away from the gunman’s hands, saving everyone else in that room.”

It was not clear (according to the last article) if the injured teacher is the same one who swatted the gun away. Also, there is video at both links.

A Middle schooler?
So, the kid was only between 12 and 14?

Shit, they're getting younger and younger .. :(

Let us know if your nephew is okay.

(Welcome to the den.)

Thank you. My nephew is okay, shook up, but he was in a different classroom. He doesn't know the shooter or victims personally.

One of my friends, however... Her daughter was in that classroom! The teacher is the one who was shot. He tackled the boy, saving the the other students. My friend's daughter is all kinds of freaked out. She hasn't really slept all weekend, nightmares when she does, a lot of tears. My friend isn't much better. Too many "what could have beens".

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A 13-year-old boy has shown no remorse for shooting his teacher and a classmate at his Indianapolis-area school, and he will remain the responsibility of the state juvenile detention system until he is 18, an Indiana judge ruled Wednesday.

Hamilton County Circuit Court Judge Paul Felix rejected a request from the boy’s attorneys that he be sent to a private treatment facility for shooting seventh-grade science teacher Jason Seamanand 13-year-old Ella Whistler during the May 25 attack at Noblesville West Middle School.

The boy admitted responsibility for the attack and apologized during a hearing last week. The boy’s admission in juvenile court is similar to a guilty plea in adult court.

“I did not think it was sincere,” Felix said during the teen’s punishment hearing Wednesday. “No remorse was shown last week.”

The boy planned the attack on his own and had meant for it to be deadly, Felix said.

“You went into the school intending to kill not just two people but many people,” Felix told the boy. “You wanted devastation, an inescapable tragedy for the ages.”

Felix ordered that the boy be sent to the Indiana Department of Correction for placement in a state juvenile detention facility for rehabilitation. He will be placed on probation after turning 18.

The Associated Press isn’t using the boy’s name because he is charged as a juvenile.

Defense lawyer Christopher Eskew said he worries that the youth won’t receive the counseling he needs in the state juvenile system, arguing that most of its programs are for alcohol, drug or sexual abuse.

“There’s very little actual emotional treatment there,” Eskew said.

Prosecutors said the boy “is obsessed with violence being committed upon innocent people.” Investigators said that the day before the shooting, he filmed a video in his family’s basement in which he showed two handguns and said: “Tomorrow’s Friday, you know what that means. I have to take other people’s lives before I take my own.”

Whistler survived after being shot seven times. The teacher, Seaman, was shot three times. He testified last week that the boy returned to his classroom from a bathroom break and opened fire.

Seaman, a former football player at Southern Illinois University, said he threw a miniature basketball at the boy as he fired shots, and then tackled the youth and disarmed him.

Investigators testified that the boy’s online history was filled with searches for school shootings, including the day before the shooting, when he allegedly searched for “What was the largest mass shooting in America.” He also searched for a “blueprint” of the Noblesville school.
