Margaret Ann Elchin, 41, was arrested earlier this week, Sheriff Todd Entrekin announced Friday. Authorities said the Boaz woman is accused of giving a 5-year-old boy a pill that caused him to be unconscious at times and slurred his speech.
The child was dropped at school by Elchin and that is when school faculty members noticed something was wrong and called medical personnel. He was taken to the hospital. Authorities have not identified the pill given to the boy.
Elchin is charged with aggravated child abuse. She was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Etowah County Detention Center. She was released Thursday after posting $50,000 bond. As a condition of her release, she is not allowed any unsupervised contact with any child under the age of 18.
Her relationship to the child was not disclosed.
