Gianfranco Marin, 28, killed his 2-year-old son earlier this year after the boy "wouldn't stop crying," a prosecutor said Wednesday.
That was revealed as Marin, pleaded guilty in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court to voluntary manslaughter and child endangering.
"Mr. Marin was feeling ill, and the child wouldn’t stop crying," Assistant Prosecutor Elizabeth Polston said.
Judge Curt Hartman sentenced Marin to 18 years in prison, a sentence that had been agreed to as part of the plea.
Police have said Marin confessed to causing his son Aiden's death on Jan. 10.
When Colerain police officers were dispatched that morning, Aiden was lying in the doorway of his bedroom. His mother, 36-year-old Samantha Sicker, was attempting CPR.
Both Sicker and Marin, who was her boyfriend, said Aiden had fallen out of his playpen and struck his head on nearby furniture. Sicker told police the boy was standing on a "bucket" in the playpen.
“He had a bad fall into my mom’s china cabinet," Sicker said in the 911 call.
Aiden died from blunt force trauma to his head, neck and torso, court documents say.
Sicker is awaiting trial on a charge of obstructing justice.
