The one case were the U.K. was too harsh in it’s sentencing.

After pleading guilty to manslaughter, fraud, and false representation, Barbara Coombes received a nine-year sentence this week.

UK authorities only learned about the 2006 murder in January when 63-year-old Coombes walked into a police station and confessed, reports the Guardian. Authorities then uncovered the body of World War II veteran Kenneth Coombes in Barbara Coombes’ garden in Greater Manchester.

He would have been 87 when his daughter him in the head with a shovel, then slit his throat with its blade, reports the BBC.

Though Coombes said she feared her father would hurt or kill her, Judge Timothy King didn’t believe she acted in self-defense. The sentence he handed down, however, took into account what he referred to as “40 years of extreme mental, physical and sexual abuse.”

Coombes said her father allowed men to take explicit photos of her as a girl and went on to rape her hundreds of times, possibly fathering a child who died shortly after birth. She said she finally snapped after discovering explicit photos of naked infants, including herself.

King said PTSD and severe depression clouded her judgment but suggested she only confessed because a housing official had become suspicious of her father’s whereabouts, per the Manchester Evening News. Coombes fraudulently claimed $250,000 in benefits for her father before confessing.

I’m wondering how many of those nine years were actually for the manslaughter.

When I was in my 20's, I used to fantasize seeking revenge on my stepfather in his old age, when he was just as helpless as I was as a child. It was an entertaining fantasy, hiring an ex con to sodomize him while telling him "you know you love it". But to do that would make me like him. That said, I can't judge her, she is what his abuse created.

I think this is a dupe. From previous news items this was a badly messed up family.
She chose murder and fraud. Sentence seems fair.
Here's that pony anyway. One of my favorite breeds, the Exmoor.

You mean I could have had that pony? Damn my morality.

I think maybe there would have been more sympathy had she not pilfered the 250k from the government.

I guess she felt like she deserved the funds after all she had been through. Oh well, she fucked it all up.

The reason she was given a harsh sentence is quite simple. In the UK, victim's actions are more a threat to the government than are criminal's. For victims to either protect, or exact justice, for themselves is to threaten the local authorities control over the people. The authorities already know they can't control the criminal population, so they can't afford to lose control over the rest of the people (who are normally decent and law-abiding) and are quick to punish them when they step out of line as an example to the others.

It is an undeniable fact that this pussified nation does not care about crime victims.

That said, this wopman is a fucking idiot for turning herself in or not doin a better job making this look like self defense. Hard to have sympathy for someone who essentially chooses to be put in prison. Fool.

I would have sentenced her to time served and then given her a thoroughbred horse.

Pony still best. When the govt changes her identity and sends her to live in one of those seaside towns that used to be a tourist destination but now a depressed area full of parolees, the pony will be the easy keeper.

I can't blame her for killing him, after a lifetime of abuse and torture. It wasn't the choice I made, and I don't think it's the right choice, but I can understand why she would make it. I bet finding the toddler porn pics, including pics of HER was the straw that broke her camel's back. She reached her limit. I hope she can find some kind of peace now.

This isn't about getting revenge at all.

She supposedly let him abuse her all the way into her 50's, even while she was married and living separate from him. She then moved back into his house when she got divorced...and brought her daughter to live there.

She told all their family that the dad died. Lied to his doctors and everyone else. Family became suspicious and started asking for a death certificate. They even asked her if she'd accidentally killed him and she acted all shocked they would think that. Coincidentally she turned herself in one day prior to workers coming for a scheduled welfare check on her dad. If it really was done while under duress she could have called it in when it happened and probably gotten off. That she hauled in 2,000lbs of dirt and made an elaborate grave for him in the backyard speaks volumes.

It should also be taken into account that even though she claims she was molested for 40 years..there's no actual proof for it and she is the only one giving that story. Some of the UK news sources bring this up but the American sources are just sensationalizing on the thought of her being raped for 40+ years. In court it was only proven that he was a "violent bully". Her actual police statement doesn't even mention her being molested, it says she was physically abused.

The examples of him being verbally abusive towards the kids aren't really all that "extreme" either. Definitely not enough to warrant murdering someone.

She told her loved ones he had died suddenly from a heart condition. Her brother was informed of the death in a hand-written note she posted through his letterbox.

Her dad, she insisted, had been taken to hospital and was later cremated. He wouldn’t have wanted ‘the fuss’ of a funeral, she said.

While the family knew he was dead, although not how, the authorities believed Kenneth was alive. The dark truth of his real fate would remain a secret Barbara Coombes would keep to herself for 12 years.

While her father was still alive, she had married, but she moved back into the home on Matlock Road when the marriage ended.

And after his death, despite the body decaying under a tree in the back garden, she continued to live there.

She slept in a back bedroom, just a few metres from her father’s secret grave. She fraudulently cashed his pension and also a carer’s allowance, handouts which totalled almost £190,000 over the years.

At one point Barbara Coombes was spotted throwing Kenneth’s possessions away in a skip, but she still wasn’t caught.

She continued to open her father’s correspondence, even replying in his name. His dentist was told he didn’t want any appointments and his GP, urging him to have the flu vaccine, was also rebuffed.

Years later, Ms Coombes’ family tried to get their hands on Kenneth's death certificate, but of course it didn’t exist.

They even asked her whether she had killed him, accidentally, but Ms Coombes put on a show of being affronted and asked how they could possibly pose such an awful question.

Barbara Coombes skilfully kept the authorities in the dark while fellow residents at Matlock Road knew only that Kenneth had ‘just disappeared’.

[...]A housing association officer organised a ‘winter wellness’ visit for Mr Coombes, who would then have been 99 were he still alive.

Barbara tried to bluff her way out of it but a date was set.

On January 7 this year, the day before the meeting was scheduled to take place, she walked into Cheadle Heath police station and made a confession which must have shocked detectives: “I murdered my father 12 years ago.”

She was interviewed by police and then gave a prepared statement in which she said she had been ‘subjected to physical violence from my father from a young age’.

She said she witnessed her father assaulting her mother on many occasions, and if she tried to intervene he would tell her to mind her own business.

Her father was said to have cruelly told her he didn’t believe she was his daughter and that he wished she were a boy.

[...]Michelle Colborne, for the prosecution, said Ms Coombes had suffered ‘a lifetime of abuse, verbal, physical and potentially sexual’.

Sentencing, Mr Justice Timothy King said Ms Coombes told a ‘series of elaborate lies to cover your tracks’.

The judge said he believed Ms Coombes would have never gone to the police if it hadn’t been for the visit from the housing officer.

The judge said he accepted that the impact of the abuse she claims to have suffered at her father’s hands was ‘devastating’, but said although that could explain the killing, it could not excuse it.

The mother-of-one, who had suffered 40 years of physical and verbal torment from her "formidable" ex-military father, then "snapped", the court heard.

Coombes had been in the garden digging at the time.

Feeling "utterly disgusted and mortified" she walked into the living room of the family home and hit him over the back of the head with the shovel.

When he turned around she then struck him a second time, slashing his throat with the blade edge of the tool.

As he bled to death, she wrapped her father in carpet and put him in the garden before ordering a ton of soil and burying him the next day.

The court heard how Coombes had suffered "a lifetime" of extreme physical and verbal abuse from Mr Coombes, who was described as a violent bully, the court heard.

Psychiatric reports found the she had post-traumatic stress disorder and a severe depressive illness.

Michelle Colborne QC said although the story of abuse Coombes had suffered came from herself, there was evidence to show her account was not "contrived".

All around shit show. While I like to err on the side of believing the victim sometimes things just seem too convenient. She killed her dad......with such a great compelling reason! But the evidence disappeared. Her story just seems a little "too good" (and I hate using the term good, but you know what I mean).
